Description Pavel Kreuzt 2019-10-06 11:28:27 CEST
Description of problem:

Shortly after installing the new kernel, rebooted to take advantage of it. Few minutes after login, the system froze and I had to hard reset. With older kernel-4.14.137 this doesn't happen.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

kernel-4.14.145-2

How reproducible:

Install latest kernel (kernel-4.14.145-2), reboot and login.

After rebooting from frozen, can you attach a system log of the previous boot?

As root issue:

  journalctl -b -1 > younamethisfile

And then compress it before attaching:

  xz younamethisfile

Here is the log. If it helps, I noticed in previous boots I had Transmission BT client running, but not this time. Since the freeze delayed, I tried opening it: as soon as I added a new torrent, the computer froze again. When I rebooted, the torrent was not there on Transmission interface. Could it be related to limits?
Comment 3 Morgan Leijström 2019-10-06 22:30:41 CEST
OK... try using the new kernel long time without Transmission, and see if it is stable.

When system freeze, have you tried to switch to text console i.e Ctrl-Alt-F2 ?

In log there is a rather high number of Warning, fail, error, and every second it attempts and fails to run /usr/libexec/hddtemp -n -q /dev/sda] - "Already running in a session."

I do not see anything specific, but this is not my cup of tea.

Can you see if log is different when booting 4.14.137 ?
Comment 4 Pavel Kreuzt 2019-10-08 18:50:07 CEST
I used kernel-4.14.145-2 yesterday all day long without issues, something is happening between Transmission and this kernel because with older kernel it works without problems.

Yes, i tried to switch to another VTs but the system is completely unresponsive.

The problem you noted in logs is about Xfce4-sensors-plugin using /usr/bin/hddtemp, which is a wrapper to run privileged hddtemp through pkexec. It's only a warning and non-fatal. This happens too with older kernels.

No, there's no difference with 4.14.137, at least that I can see.

Thank you for reporting this.

However mga6 is supposed to be out of support now.
- We could ping kernel maintainer and Transmission packagers, but as mga6 is supposed to be EOL I think their efforts are better spent on Mageia 7.

We are still working on upgrade issues
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_7_Errata#Upgrade_issues

Is there some problem staying on the old kernel or trying another torrent program until you can upgrade to Mageia 7?

(Or make a good backup/disk image and try to upgrade per that link instructions)
Morgan Leijström 2019-10-08 20:09:15 CEST

Summary: Upgrade to latest kernel leads to total freeze soon after login => Latest kernel (4.14.145-2) + Transmission = system freeze

Comment 6 Pavel Kreuzt 2019-10-09 11:08:03 CEST
Then I'll stick to the older kernel until upgrade to 7 is safe. Thanks for your time anyway.
Comment 7 Morgan Leijström 2019-10-09 11:41:57 CEST
Thank you.

Lets keep the bug open for a while so others can find it more easily.

Close as old in some months.
Comment 8 Lewis Smith 2019-10-10 14:43:08 CEST
Since this really looks like a regression in an updated kernel, assigning it to that team despite the short time which remains for M6.
CC akien for 'transmission' for info.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 6 is end of life.

Mageia stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 6. At that time this bug will be closed as OLD (EOL).

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to
fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later
Mageia version prior to Mageia 6's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we cannot
be able to fix it before Mageia 6 was end of life.
If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime,
sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia
release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
