Does the same thing happen if you boot with the Live version of Mageia?

And secondly, what installation media did you use to install Mageia?

The complete iso?
Netbased installation iso?
Live iso

After searching on google when it comes to the Fn key not working, you can add this to the end of the GRUB commandline:

acpi_osi=Linux
Then the GRUB commandline will look something similar to this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash  acpi_osi=Linux"

Save the file and do

update-grub

as root in the terminal.

@Willy
> Since the kernels after kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6
So did the problem arise after the update to this kernel?
If so, are you able to boot successfully into an older kernel from the Grub 'advanced options' boot sub-menu?

Can you say what your graphics hardware is?

> Every time I attempt to login
Can you please clarify how far the boot process goes before you hit the problem?
- Do you see the normal grub boot menu?
- Does the booting complete, but you end up with the dark screen, rather than the display manager login screen?

> The screen is too dark and the Fn keys doesn't work
Can you confirm that Ctrl/Alt/F3 (say) does not give you a console login screen?

@Kristoffer
Thank you for your suggestions. But re comments 1 & 2, note that this bug relates to Mageia 6, old; so the installation ISO or media are almost certainly not relevant, as they might be for a new Mageia 7.1 installation.

Hello !

Precisely :
- The BACKLIGHT is disabled since kernels after kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6.
- The BACKLIGHT still works with kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6.

With a friend, we have been trying :
- to add acpi_osi=Linux to the end of the GRUB commandline
- to remove splash option.
- to stop vesafb
But it still doesn’t work.

The cause may be a changement of option at the time of the new kernel compilation after the kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6 ????

Thanks !

Sorry, this is confusing: the same kernel version.

Please answer these questions (from c4):
* are you able to boot successfully into an older kernel from the Grub 'advanced options' boot sub-menu?
* Are you able to get to a console login screen with Ctrl/Alt/F2-6 ?
---------------
Since Mageia 6 is now superseded by Mageia 7, may I suggest also that you try (because your computer is 32-bit) our M7 Live Xfce 32-bit ISO, just in *live* mode, to see whether it works for you? That would not touch your existing system.

Hello !

Precisely :
The BACKLIGHT still works with kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6.
The BACKLIGHT doesn’t works with all the others kernels after that one.

From c4 :
I’m able to boot successfully into the older kernel 4.14.89-1.mga6 from the Grub 'advanced options' boot sub-menu. Then, I’m able to get a console login screen with Ctrl/Alt/F2.

The BACKLIGHT doesn’t works with Mageia 7 in live mode.

Sorry for my approximately english and Linux knowledge. Thanks !

Thank you Willy for this clarification.
I imagine you will continue to use the older kernel. Do not loose it! I believe that Mageia 6 is no longer supported, no updates, but because you say:
> The BACKLIGHT doesn’t works with Mageia 7 in live mode
I have updated the version to 7.

Are you in a position to upgrade to Mageia 7? To be able to fall back to your current system, you must be able to archive it (the / partition) entirely, and be able to restore it if necessary. Also, if you do it on line, you need a *lot* of free disc space to accommodate all the packages involved in the upgrade. You can test the upgrade with the --test parameter.
Alternatively, you can use the Classic installer to upgrade. But there will be a lot of updates to apply subsequently.
Do you have a spare partition to install Mageia 7 into alongside Mageia 6? That would be best: you can then choose either from the Grub2 boot menu.

The problem I foresee is that if you get to Mageia 7 and the problem persists, you would have no means of correcting that system, and the problem would be difficult to diagnose. But it is *this* situation which needs investigating, not the Mageia 6 one.
Hence the desirability of being able to revert to Mageia 6, although you cannot stay with that forever.

Version: 6 => 7

Too old. I'm willing to closed it OLD (EOL against Mageia 6).

Seems that after a kernel more recent than 4.14.89-1.mga6 (which work some) reporter's hardware no longer properly work.

Bug Reporter: have you upgraded your hardware to an other in meantime, or still use it?

Assigning to Kernel and Drivers team to forensics this.

Sorry but without solution I have changed my linux distribution for my ASUS EEE PC 1025 C. Of course, I keep Mageia for my other computer !

Thanks for your research !
