Description Patrik Andersson 2019-09-15 14:14:22 CEST
Description of problem:
Mageia 7.1 : Neither of the two 64-bit Netinstall-isos works from usb.

First I tried the Non-free iso. I checked the checksums. I put it on the usb-stick following the instructions: dd if=Mageia-7.1-netinstall-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sd? bs=1M

It got as far as the Help-screen. When I hit Enter or Linux+Enter, the usb-light flashed briefly, then returned to its earlier steady glow, and the screen turned black. Then nothing more happened.

This was on a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s. I tried with two usb-sticks, all three usb-ports (on the target, the Thinkpad), and both with just hitting Enter and with typing Linux and hitting Enter. So twelve attempts; everytime I waited a long time to make sure it was not just very slow.

Then I tried the Free iso. It did not even get that far. It got stuck at the first screen that normally only flashes by briefly, the one with a text-row at the top: "ISOLINUX 6.04 Mageia EHDD ..."

I did everything the same now, two usb-sticks, all three usb-ports on the Thinkpad. Only now with one of the sticks I left out the bs=1M part.

With the Free I also tried with another, much older laptop (as target). Same thing there.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia-7.1-netinstall-nonfree-x86_64.iso
Mageia-7.1-netinstall-x86_64.iso

How reproducible:
Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download a netinstall iso.
2. Put in on a usb-stick with dd if=Mageia-7.1-netinstall-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sd? bs=1M
3. Start computer.

Sorry, my mistake. When I tried with a _third_ usb-stick, it worked as expected.
