What GPU? Can you start xpenguins in terminal window to see any errors written to the console.. CC:
(none) =>
tmb GPU is G-Force MX4000 with Mga's nVidia driver. Currently running the nouveau driver for other reasons. No error messages in xterm window. Can't run it in a tty Any warnings / errors in dmesg or journalctl log ? None in either. I went into old Cauldron for comparison. No different, but the initial bootup screen had pieces all over the place. I have noticed the same thing on Mint, even on a fresh reinstall. May not be relevant; I just don't know. Running a brand new HDD, but earlier today /home was corrupted, and required a manual fsck. May be time to blow out some dust. xpenguins runs fine in a IceWM session, but not on anything with graphics. Sounds as though my problem is elsewhere.Mesa Gears and Teapot have no issues. What I see in your link https://www.dropbox.com/s/z90oy7yhvoufz53/xpenguins.png?dl=0 is what I see on my computer, too. The difference is that I thought it was meant to be like that ;-) (In reply to Doug Laidlaw from comment #4) > I have noticed the same thing on Mint, even on a fresh reinstall. The same xpenguins thing? If so, then this is either an upstream bug or a feature. Btw, isn't what we see an army of penguins? http://xpenguins.seul.org/ contains the string: > Ever wanted to send an army of cute little penguins to invade the screen... shlomif The "army of penguins" is a crowd of individual penguins. The number of penguins is configurable: see man xpenguins. Each penguin moves down like the one on the right-hand edge of the page at http://xpenguins.seul.org/ The series of repeat images giving the rainbow look is what is new. In previous releases, the single penguin moves to a new location on the screen, and the previous image is deleted. The xpenguins home page is very old (release no. is 2.2.1,) and the program may not have been updated for newer graphics. I moved to IceWM, and the penguins appeared as they should. That suggests a screen refresh or graphics overload issue. On my box, xfwm4 runs at the top of the process list all the time. That may be a clue. xpenguins is drawn to the root window, and MATE hides the root window, so nothing is visible at all. On a forum, openbox was suggested as a desktop. I can reproduce it, and it seems like an upstream problem because the package is lightly patched.

UPSTREAM I don't know why I mentioned Mint. Mint 19 is using an old version (2.2.11) that runs O.K. In 7.1 Official, xpenguins 2.2.12 for Mga4 still shows the bug. The problem must be outside the package. I will try to convert Mint's .deb file. Compiling from scratch is a very different procedure from the usual, and I gave up. Looking at the xpenguins Home Page, the most recent version is xpenguins-2.2, released in 2001. The current suffix version 16 arises solely from successive mass rebuilds. rpm.pbone.net can't find a release in any other distro. Maybe it is time to retire xpenguins? Re-assigning globally due to change to no specific maintainer. Assignee:

pkg-bugs This package seems to be beyond resuscitation. See Comment 11. Some of the dependencies mentioned on its Home Page are no longer available. It needs to be rebuilt for a current Mageia release. Closing the bug therefore as Wontfix. Status:
