The bug is broader than initially described (.png -> Okular); it is another example of 'which application' for which file type, and [in]consistency in multiple desktop installs.
Trying M7beta3 just updated, Classic ISO x64 all desktops, real H/W;
GDM -> Cinnamon. No sign of Okular here!

From Nemo file manager: From Dolphin:
 .png Shotwell Gwenview
 .gif Gwenview "
 .jpg Shotwell "
 .bmp Gwenview "
 .ppm Gwenview "
 .tif Shotwell "
 .pbm Gwenview "
I guess the default bitmap image application for Cinnamon should be Shotwell, but it seems to depend on the file manager too.
I am assigning to Jani for his comment, because he fielded bug#24326 re multi-media applications which sometimes show the same variability.

Sorry Ben, I overlooked your essential point that this is another case, like bug#24326, where the default application for certain file types is inappropriate [Okular being a document viewer] even though it does the job in a manner of speaking. Other inconsistencies are less important so long as the launched application is appropriate.
Reverted the title accordingly.

M7 beta3 Classic install real x64 hardware 6 desktops.
I have just discovered that Cinnamon by default opens .pdf files with *Inkscape* (which wants to import them). The context menu 'open with' does offer normal PDF viewers. I tried these file managers, same behaviour:
 Nemo [normal]
 PCmanFM

Cinnamon's default app for .pdf files is xreader, which isn't installed by default. And for .txt files the default is xed, which isn't installed either by default.

I think I'll need to tweak meta-task a bit for cinnamon.

I've now updated rpmsrate-raw and cinnamon's default mimeapps.list based on gnome's one. There should be now more default apps for several file types.
