Description Frank Griffin 2019-04-22 02:50:06 CEST
For about the last 2-3 weeks in cauldron, a k3b burn request using "Verify written data" hangs. This occurs for both DVD and CDRW burns. Moreover, even if the actual burn is reported with a successful completion, the resulting disk cannot be identified ("no medium found").

The same CDRW disk can be reburned with xfburn with no problem. The DVD-R(DL) is a coaster. Again, xfburn burns the same DVD ISO on a fresh disk with no problem.

I had reverted from xfburn to k3b about a month or more ago because it has the "verify written data" option, while xfburn doesn't and requires me to use cmp between the drive and the ISO manually to verify. And it was working fine until this problem showed up. It hasn't worked since.

Easiest way to reproduce is to try burning an MGA install/images ISO image to a CDRW. At least that way, the disk from the failed burn is salvageable.

You may need to reboot to get the disk blank back, as at least Plasma will continue to report "no medium found" until you do. Apparently, either the detection mechanism is left in an iffy state or the drive itself is.

BTW, this is an external USB DVD burner; I tested with two different ones (a Polaroid and a Verbatim).

I have tested this with Mageia7 beta3 using k3b under Xfce to write+verify an ISO on DVD-RW. It all went OK (except k3b itself was ultra-slow to get going, but the machine was very busy). No subsequent problems, the DVD got automatically re-mounted & recognised. Alas, I cannot give that k3b version because...

At the same time a big update was happening, which included k3b, now:
k3b-19.04.0-1.mga7and a lot of KDE stuff.
I will re-try under Plasma, but need to re-boot first.

I forgot to note before that my CD/DVD drive is internal ATAPI, not USB; could that be significant? And I have no CD-RW to try.

This time under Plasma. The previously written DVD was recognised & openable with Dolphin.
I re-ran the k3b (updated version as in previous comment) ISO write + verify to a DVD-RW, again all went OK, and the resulting DVD was recognised & openable with Dolphin.
@Frank: was your system up-to-date? M7 updates are copious. Please check the k3b version causing you grief:
 $ rpm -q k3b

Yes, I update almost daily.

[root@ftglap ~]# rpm -q k3b
k3b-19.04.0-1.mga7
[root@ftglap ~]#

Since this version just landed, I'll retest just to be sure.
