Description nikos papadopoulos 2019-02-27 21:32:04 CET
Description of problem:
So, I installed Mageia 7 beta 2, for testing,
and played around with it.

(First positive impression is that things seem to work fine)

The negative thing,
that instantly slapped me in the face, the most,
is the amount of advertisement on the web.
Makes the whole experience ho-r-ri-ble!

Moreover, having used a netbook in the past,
I know that all those ads
consume more resources
than the real content,
on a webpage.
They make surfing the web almost impossible,
for older computers
(them ads, along with various javascripts).

But you can always use ad blockers. Right?
Not exactly.
There is a number of users out there,
that don't know what ad blockers are,
or that they even exist!

Therefore I propose having an add blocker,
by default, on Firefox.

.

Instant problems:

+ Ad blockers can be considered a form of censorship.
We have seen Mozilla's protection from "bad" or "infected" websites
misbehaving in the past.

+ Ad blockers can be annoying.
Because of all those options or questions.
The simplest ad blockers should be chosen.

+ Ad blockers might displease sponsors.
I don't know. Does Mageia have commercial sponsors?
Do they have objections?

+ Ad blockers, sometimes block the wrong content,
or brake websites.

+ Finally, how do these ad blockers actually work?
Any privacy concerns?

.

For the above reasons,
an ad blocker extension should be added,
but be disabled by default.

That defeats the whole purpose, you might say.
Yes, but "only(?)" 9 out of 10 times.
Some, few, of those people,
who are not familiar with ad blockers,
will see this extension,
and say,
"Hmmm... What is that..? Let's give it a try..."

.

I use and recommend both "uBlock Origin" and "Bluehell Firewall",
with IceApe.

.

You can see this whole thing as an experiment.
Users might like it, dislike it, or ignore it.

How reproducible:
every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install Mageia 7 beta 2
2. run Firefox
3. browse the web

Assigning to all packagers collectively, since there is no registered maintainer for firefox.

There is no need for an "adblocker-package" in Mageia. It would only be additional work without any "plus".

Webextensions are provided/distributed/installed/updated/maintained directly via the browser or https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/

Closing WONTFIX.
