Description Gilbert BONNET 2019-02-02 21:00:04 CET
Description of problem:

Dongle Wifi 802.11n WLAN NIC was perfectly running under Mageia 6

Under Mageia 7 kernel 4.20.6-desktop-2.mga7 this dongle is recognized by the system but after the configuration there is an error message telling it was impossible to connect.

I precise that an very old dongle 802.11g that i use for emergency is running with the same configuration without any problem.

Thanks for answers.

Thanks, Frédéric, I hadn't seen this bug report :-/

@ Gilbert

Please attach log.txt that is the result of running, as root,

   journalctl -b > log.txt

after booting the system with the dongle attached and then configuring it.

If you can still boot Mageia 6 or boot with a Mageia 6 kernel and see your dongle work fine, then please run the same command and attach that log, too.

Bonjour Marja

I send to you the log.txt file you asked to me. You will see I have
tried to connect twice with the dongle without success

Sorry I can't return to Mageia 6 because I'm not using Virtualbox to
test Mageia 7.

The wifi driver is having issues:

r8188eu: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

mars 06 19:46:01 localhost.localdomain ifplugd(wlp0s29u1u1)[1638]: Using interface wlp0s29u1u1/80:3F:5D:20:F8:A1 with driver <r8188eu> (version: )
mars 06 19:46:01 localhost.localdomain ifplugd(wlp0s29u1u1)[1638]: Using detection mode: wireless extension
mars 06 19:46:01 localhost.localdomain kernel: IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlp0s29u1u1: link is not ready
mars 06 19:46:01 localhost.localdomain ifplugd(wlp0s29u1u1)[1638]: Initialization complete, link beat not detected.

There is now a kernel 5.0.0 building so sometimes tomorrow you should be able to test if the driver has improved there

Bonjour

No improvement with kernel 5.0.0
Comment 6 Thomas Backlund 2019-03-07 08:04:17 CET
ok, so the driver I backported in mga6 seems to work better :/

Can you with the wifi dongle connected to the computer,

and then attach the output of the commands:

lspcidrake -v

lsusb

to this bugreport

Nothing have change: its Impossible to use Dongle Wifi 802.11n WLAN NIC
with Mageia 7 with the last Kernel 5.7.19-desktop-1.mga7 64 bits.

This dongle run with Win 7 on the same PC (Double Boot).

Ping: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu for the kernel module. Seems it has support for 5.8 kernel
Comment 12 Giuseppe Ghibò 2020-09-23 20:33:15 CEST
For cauldron, the kernel module for 5.8 is still in staging (and is called r8188eu.ko).

Does the one from lwfinger works? It can be tried manually (outside packaging) using:

git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu
cd rtl8188eu
make
make install

it compiles smootly. The alternative module is called 8188eu.ko. If that works better we can maybe include the one from lwfinger as 3rdparty.

Mageia 7 is EOL since July 1st 2021.
There will not have any further bugfix for this release.

You are encouraged to upgrade to Mageia 8 as soon as possible.

@reporter, if this bug still apply with Mageia 8, please let us know it.

@packager, if you work on the Mageia 7 version of your package, please check the Mageia 8 package if issue is also present. In this case, please fix the Mageia 8 version instead.

This bug report will be closed OLD if there is no further notice within 1st September 2021.
Comment 14 Marja Van Waes 2021-09-07 14:11:23 CEST
Hi bug reporter and hi assignee and others involved,

Please reopen this bug report if it is still valid for Mageia 8 or 9(cauldron), and change "Version:" in the upper left of this report accordingly.

This report is being closed as OLD because it was filed against Mageia 7, for which support ended on June 30th 2021.

Thanks,
Marja
