Isodumper has been created to manage the format of Mageia ISO, ie hybrid iso DVD format. The writing method is like dd. I think that Mint, Suse also use this format. Isodumper can also write memory cards for Raspberry PI. It is meant to stay simple, I hope. I don't plan to extend its usage to other format. We have tools such unetbootin which can manage other formats. Thus closing Resolution:

WONTFIX I have tested UNetbooting, both ISO- and diskette mode, but the results are the same. There is no indication that anything is wrong during burning, and then the memory stick is found by the boot menu, but does not boot any of the three Linux live operating systems. I have also entered Bug 24217 for this. I do suggest for IsoDumper that somewhere in the GUI you write down the few things that the program actually can do, so everyone do not have to burn many different ISO files just to see that the memory sticks do not boot. Like the name suggest, isodumper dumps an image without processing it. The Mageia isos themselves are designed to be able to boot from both optical media or USB. Many other systems need special treatment, and there are tools, see systemrescuecd site for their method. CC:

fri I suggest that IsoDumper provides information about what it can and can not do. Write about processing often being needed and where processing information may be found. The name IsoDumper do not suggest anything else than burning a bootable iso file on a memory stick. Especially as long as I have never heard about processing an iso file before it can be burned on a memory stick. Without experience, I would of course assume that an iso file that is written to be a live operating system just needs to be burnt to a memory stick with Rufus, IsoDumber, UNetbootin etc. without anything else. |
I have attempted to produce bootable memory sticks for different operating systems with different software. Here are the results: Mageia Live 6.1 64-bit Knoppix 7.2.0 SystemRescueCd 5.3.1 Rufus 3.4 ISO Image Mode: Seems Works Works (Windows) to freeze during boot. DD Image Mode: (Possible less access to the drive) Works ISO to USB 1.5 Failed Works not Works not (Windows) IsoDumper 0.59 Works Works not Works not (Mageia) dd 8.25 Works almost, it stops Works not Works not (Mageia) right at the end of booting I believe IsoDumper should be able to produce a bootable memory stick of Knoppix and SystemRescueCd, especially since Rufus in Windows is able to. It is no wonder ISO to USB is not able to produce bootable memory sticks of Linux because it self writes that it is only able to do so with Windows, but I wanted to include them since I made an attempt to see what would happen.
