Description Barry Jackson 2011-08-01 19:00:47 CEST
Description of problem:
Hitting F3 at the grub boot menu and selecting DEFAULT and then adding "3" to the kernel command line does not boot into RL3 - it boots into RL5.
This happens in mga1 and Cauldron (both x86_64 systems.

[baz@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=LABEL=cauldron nokmsboot resume=UUID=1097bb8c-3820-4b3a-b796-b417c9aa56d8 splash=silent vga=785 3

The above boots into RL5.

or maybe not, add tmb in CC.

@ Barry

Is the issue still there?

Can't reproduce for Mga1 i586, btw

(and in Cauldron i586, I'm on systemd... for problems booting into RL3 with systemd, see bug 3251)

CC: (none) => marja11

In mga1 this is still the same for me.
Adding 3 to the kernel command line seems to be ignored and it boots to KDE graphical logi-in.

In Cauldron sysvinit boot, things have changed. the system boot messages continue until the final services have been started (apache,mysql,zoneminder) and then the cursor just sits at the start of the next line.
It is in RL3 and a CTRL/ALT/F1 gets to a log-in and startx starts the DM.
So, it's sort of fixed in Cauldron, but a log-in prompt would be a better place to arrive!

I normally boot using systemd but could not remember the command to test the non-graphical boot - I'm sure no one ever will!

So changing Mga version to 1 for this bug report.

CC'ing some people from Bug Squad

Correction - I just discovered that I was actually booting systemd when I did the Cauldron test. Using sysvinit in Cauldron this is now fixed - no probems at all and it does land at a log-in.

@Manuel I am baffled by your inability to reproduce this in mga1.

I have just re-tested on my wife's laptop after a full update (i586 mga1) and using (at the grub menu) F3 => ENTER => 3 => ENTER
The machine boots into RL5 and the message on the screen as it scrolls past says the same, so that's two totally different installations of mga1 (one i586 and one x86_64) here exhibiting the same "bug".

The laptop was an online update from Mdv

Still - if it's fixed in Cauldron then not a big issue ;)
Comment 10 Marja Van Waes 2011-12-06 16:43:14 CET
The i586 laptop on which I booted into RL3 OK, was a clean Mga install.

@ Manuel, did test on an upgraded-from-Mdv Mga1?

@ Barry: your wife's system was upgraded from Mdv. Was your system, too?

Hardware: x86_64 => All

Comment 11 Manuel Hiebel 2011-12-06 17:59:20 CET
hum, I have tested from the non graphical gfxboot, I can retest the next time I reboot the computer

and yes my Mga1 is a upgrade one.
Comment 12 Manuel Hiebel 2011-12-06 18:57:17 CET
Ok if I add 3 in gfxboot it works too (without remove the rest)

No - IIRC it is a continuous update from probably RC2 but it may have been from release I can't remember. Definitely not an upgrade from Mdv though, as I have only done that once - on the laptop.

I will make another minimal install of mga1 and update it to test (note that I always use the HD install method using the iso directly)

I made a new clean minimal Mga1 LXDE x86_64 installation from the full DVD iso - fully updated and there is no issue.

So I don't know - I guess close it :\

OK, thanks.
