Bug 22798

Summary: Changing the fs of a device with mkfs in French, asks "Proceed anyway? (y,N)", but doesn't accept "y" for an answer (only "o", from French "oui")

Status comment: fixed upstream in e2fsprogs-1.43.5

Description peter lawford 2018-03-18 13:59:16 CET
Description of problem:mkfs is unable to change the filesystem of a device
the best description is the following example: /dev/sdf2 has a swap filesystem:

[root@magaux alain4]# blkid |grep sdf2
/dev/sdf2: UUID="a905c813-9a8a-41b8-a56f-af76d9d43f8b" TYPE="swap"

I want to switch it to ext4:

[root@magaux alain4]# mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdf2
mke2fs 1.43.4 (31-Jan-2017)
/dev/sdf2 contient un système de fichiers swap
Proceed anyway? (y,N) y

but nothing has changed:

[root@magaux alain4]# blkid |grep sdf2
/dev/sdf2: UUID="a905c813-9a8a-41b8-a56f-af76d9d43f8b" TYPE="swap"

this example shows that mkfs doen't make its job if the device is already formatted

mkfs well worked with mageia5,4,3... and works well with others distros

the same hold if I replace "swap" and "ext4" by any other filesystems

Is this an upstream bug?

Assigning to our Basesystem maintainers, CC'ing our util-linux maintainer.

The string "Proceed anyway?" doesn't seem to come from util-linux itself https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/utils/util-linux/util-linux.git/tree/po

I'm wondering whehter the translation is supposed to come from another base system tool.

Is your system fully French, or do you have a mixed language system?

(Too early to conclude it's an upstream issue)

"Proceed anyway? (y,N)" comes from e2fsprogs

It was fuzzy, so not used, when a translator unfuzzied it on 2017-02-19

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/fs/ext2/e2fsprogs.git/commit/?id=c0149109e5e5d91db1a60985b5402092ed90197c

Unfortunately, that was after e2fsprogs-1.43.4 was released (2017-01-31), so the string appears untranslated in e2fsprogs-1.43.4-1.mga6

This message is a reminder that Mageia 6 is end of life.

Mageia stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 6. At that time this bug will be closed as FIXED (see comment #6) (EOL).

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to
fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later
Mageia version prior to Mageia 6's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we cannot
be able to fix it before Mageia 6 was end of life.
If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime,
sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia
release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
