Description of problem: After a new 32-bit Xfce install from the Classical iso on 64-bit hardware, and updating and booting into a new nvidia340 driver and server kernel 4.14.10, the system froze almost immediately when I attempted to remove server kernel 4.9.35 using MCC. The only way out was to push the reset button, which resulted in a successful boot back into the 4.14.10 server kernel.

Hardware involved:

ASRock A790GXH128M motherboard, Athlon X2 7750 processor, Geforce 9800 GT video card (nvidia340 driver), 8GB RAM, Atheros wifi, MBR hard drives.

Earlier, I had a 32-bit Plasma install on this hardware, but had some freeze-up problems with installation of kernel-linus 4.14.10 for testing, after I had updated to server kernel 4.14.10 to test that. I was eventually successful in installing kernel-linus after a cold boot into server kernel 4.9.56. I had more freeze-ups when attempting to remove kernel-linus and kernel-tmb after the tests had been completed.

Putting these crashes down to known instability of 32-bit Plasma installs on nvidia hardware, I created a new, clean (retaining /home) install of Xfce, booted into it, got updates, including a new nvidia340 driver and newly-pushed server kernel 4.14.10, and rebooted into the new kernel. After using MCC to install hardinfo, Thunderbird and Thunderbird-EN (US), and the Flashplayer plugin, I then attempted to remove the original, no-longer-needed (I thought) server kernel 4.9.35. The entire system froze. No keyboard, no mouse, nothing. No way out but the reset button.

I do not see this behavior on a 64-bit Plasma system on the same hardware.


Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Unknown. Seems to me the root cause could be the 4.14.10 server kernel, the new nvidia340 driver, drakrpm, any or all working together. But that is only speculation from someone who knows little of the inner workings of things.

I did not see this behavior on the 32-bit Plasma system before installing the newest nvidia340 driver and server kernel 4.14.10. I had successfully removed old kernels under server kernel 4.9.56, but that was before the new nvidia driver. 


How reproducible:

Unknown, but it "feels" like always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install 32-bit Mageia 6 Xfce or Plasma onto 64-bit nvidia340 hardware
2. Get all updates, including new nvidia driver and server kernel 4.14.10
3. Reboot, then attempt to remove old kernels using MCC/drakrpm.
