High Hi Philippe,
Thanks for your report.
* Can you please attach
/root/drakx/report.bug.xz
that you'll find on the root partition that you selected for the _text_ install? (You can use a Live iso to mount that partition)
* Also, can you retry a _graphical_ install, until it freezes /without/ automatic reboot and then try to switch to tty2 with "Ctrl+Alt+F2".
If that works at all, then please insert a USB key and type:
bug
report.bug will be written to the USB key. Please attach that file to this bug report, too.
Thanks :-)CC:

report.bug from the text install
NB I could do a text install and complete the configuration with the MCC after rebooting on the installed Mageia6 Everything is OK (but, out of topic : as you will see in the report, my user was created belonging to the wheel group !? and I had to enter my user password to access to the MCC instead of the root password... it took me some time to understand what to do. Is it a feature or an other bug ?) I will retry several times a graphical install later Created attachment 9699 [details]
report.bug from a try to graphical install
I used the classical DVD to "update an existing Mageia6" (knowing it would freeze too)
I tried several times to see the farther I could get
I could only go until it proposes to install grub on a selected partition and then freezes and automatically reboot ... (I couldn't use a tty at this step)
So I stop choosing options just before this step and here is the report.bug
(it seems to bring more informations about my system than what brings the other bug report from the text install...) but I don't see anything that would explain the freeze : all the informations that we get precedes the freeze and it's impossible to know what happened when it has frozen
(unless there is a way to come back from the tty to the graphical install process... when I use the tty I don't know how to get out of it)
I hope these two reports will help
Thanks to everyone for your job (it was fine enough so that I never had to write in bugzilla for a long time, until this problem I seem to be the only one to encounter... unless others had a try, saw it doesn't work and try an other distribution ....)

Is it a feature or an other bug ?) > Adding a user to the wheel group is a new feature, IIRC in the step where you set a root password and add a user, which, again IIRC, can _only_ be done after clicking on the "Advanced" button in this screen http://doc.mageia.org/installer/6/en/content/addUser.html CC'ing docteam, in case it's really there and we forgot to document it. @ docteam: note that we no longer have docteam.mageia.nl for the working version of our documents. For a text install, the default should be like before: so wheel group adding should be opt-in. Do you remember whether you had a look at the advanced options when you added a user? (In reply to Philippe Didier from comment #3) > Created attachment 9698 [details] > report.bug.xz > > report.bug from the text install Thanks! I hope we'll find time very soon, to dig into those logs. CC:

doc-bugs I looked at the end of the configureX step, and see: * Using specific NVIDIA driver and GLX extensions * running: update-alternatives --set gl_conf /etc/nvidia340/ld.so.conf with root /mnt * workaround buggy fglrx/nvidia driver: make dm restart xserver (#29550, #38297) * oops, could not fit... (width 85 > 78) * retrying forcing a smaller size for labels (78 - 4) * oops, could not fit... (width 85 > 78) * going on even if labels can't fit forced to 74 (85 < 78) * running: monitor-edid -v --perl * Plug'n Play probing failed, but Xorg may do better * defaulting background resolution to 1600x1200 * running: /sbin/display_driver_helper --is-kms-allowed with root /mnt * step "configureX" took: 0:01:09 CC'ing kernel and drivers maintainers, who'll know whether that causes this bug. Do you remember whether you had a look at the advanced > options when you added a user? > I indeed added root password, created new user, choosed nvidia proprietary driver in text mode (in spite of the garbage display... I could guess what kind of option was highlighted, knowing the last step of an install since I use Mandriva and Mageia) I "clicked the advanced button" with the space bar to be able to choose the UID and GID (wanted to have 500 to be able to have access to files, with these UID and GID, created on external HDD or internal partitions from previous versions of Mageia) I don't remember having seen any wheel group addition as an option (is it choosen as default option as soon as you select "advanced button" ?) PS You will see on the report that I also could choose to use GRUB legacy instead of GRUB2 and could choose which partition to install it on (I wanted to chain from the Mageia5 GRUB) (it's easier to modify the menu.lst by hand than to do this on GRUB2) (In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #7) > I looked at the end of the configureX step, and see: > > * Using specific NVIDIA driver and GLX extensions > * running: update-alternatives --set gl_conf /etc/nvidia340/ld.so.conf with > root /mnt > * workaround buggy fglrx/nvidia driver: make dm restart xserver (#29550, > #38297) > * oops, could not fit... I saw this too... but I don't think it is the cause of the Graphical Install freeze because the proprietary driver is not yet installed in the first steps... On the text install I can't remember if I had already choosen the proprietary driver when the garbage display appeared... Maybe I will clone my Mageia6 partition, format it and try a new text install to verify... Created attachment 9700 [details]
What show the Advanced button
For your information, here is what can be done from the "Advanced" button. There is indeed the possibility to add the user to a wheel group. None of these extra groups are documented in the Installer documentation.CC:

lebarhon Hello I did try a new text install on other partitions the post Install "Résumé" step begins to be overwhelmed by the line chroot /bin/systemctl --no-legend --no-pager --full list-unit-files since I have choosen the proprietary driver.... But this time I get stuck when I try to choose the partition where to install grub If you need it I can attach the new bug report... Second point About the fact that my user was in the wheel group I understand now When I used the advanced option to give 500 as UID and GID I certainly gave to this user the "su privilege" by selecting this option (on my already installed version of Mageia6, I corrected this by excluding this user from the wheel group (using the CCM everything OK now) Hi Morgan Yes for sure the "User Management (advanced )" part of the installer documentation needs to be extended : the six extra groups (ctools, adm, ntools, rpm, wheel, xgrp ) are not indicated I think you may close this bug with this title Mageia 6 has reached its end of life I didn't encounter this kind of problems with Mageia 7 Perhaps need to open a new bug for the missing part of the docs (out of topic : I'm trying Mageia 8 rc Live it's wonderful ) Thank you for that quick response! It works per design, but documentation is lacking yes. I issued Bug 28308 - Installer documentation: user management need be updated And yes Mageia 8 is looking wonderful :) Status comment:
