Description Hoyt Duff 2017-06-25 23:39:21 CEST
Description of problem:
Upon inserting a wireless dongle, Netgear MA111(v1) 802.11b Wireless [Intersil Prism 3.0] Vendor ID: ‎0x0846 Device ID: ‎0x4110 Module: ‎prism2_usb, the following message appears when attempting to configure a wireless connection using drakconnect:

"Some packages (prism2-utils) are required but aren't available. These packages can be found in Mageia, or in the official non-free package repository.

The following component is missing: /sbin/wlanctl-ng"

# urpmi prism2-utils
No package named prism2-utils.

So no, the package can not be found in Mageia.

However, installing an older version of prism2-utils allows the network configuration to continue. You just must find one on the Internet.

prism2-utils-0.2.8-4mdv2010.1 was available in Mandriva, but afaik it was never packaged for Mageia

The package is mentioned in a forgotten wiki page https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Cleaning_rpmsrate
and it's commented out in http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/meta-task/current/SOURCES/rpmsrate-raw?revision=1103984&view=markup#l846

I don't manage to find where prism2-utils' upstream resides nowadays, the website of linux-wlan-ng project looks very odd http://www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/

But maybe that package is no longer needed, and another package will solve the issue?

Assigning this report to the kernel and drivers maintainers, who'll know the answer.

Without prism2-utils, the configuration will fail.

After installing a prism2-utils RPM (from Mandriva, I'm at a different location today, I'll check and report back if it is not), configuration completes and the wireless connection is made.

It could be that prism2-utils should be removed as a dependency, but I don't know how to test for that.

I agree after researching all the associated documentation that it is part of an abandoned project, but it solves a problem for anyone still using old Prism USB devices. Linux is known, if nothing else, for supporting older hardware. The solution would be to re-write the Prism2 USB driver to eliminate the need for Prism2-utils, but that won't happen because the hardware is no longer sold and is considered obsolete. I may, in fact, be the only person in the world still using this hardware.

Since this issue will never be resolved and is still present in Mageia6, I will provide a workaround for anyone who has this problem and searches bugs.mageia.com for a solution.

Downloading and installing the appropriate file, with thanks to OpenMandriva, will allow the network configuration wizard to complete its task. There is an issue with how the package is signed, so one should take a leap of faith and ignore the warning to claim your reward.

Or you know, if someone wanted to build a Mageia RPM.

Actually this should be verified if we can remove references to prism2-utils in installer and have it still work or if not, add the package in our repos
