FYI, seems they don't offer the tarball anymore, but only either .deb and .rpm packages and also repositories for those. See https://repo.skype.com/rpm/stable/ and https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/
Tested the latest rpm (5.3.0.1) on mga5 and it works fine so far from what I tested.

Just received an email from skype informing that the skype version 4.3.0.37 I have installed will stop working on the first of July. So I decided to update skype manually.

I downloaded the most recent RPM package with the GNU/Linux version from:
https://repo.skype.com/rpm/stable/skypeforlinux_5.3.0.1-1.x86_64.rpm

When trying to install the package (after uninstalling the older version) I get the following messages:

# LANGUAGE=C rpm -i skypeforlinux_5.3.0.1-1.x86_64.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
        libsecret is needed by skypeforlinux-5.3.0.1-1.x86_64

The solve the key issue I downloaded the skype GPG key from:
https://repo.skype.com/data/SKYPE-GPG-KEY

And installed the key with:
rpmkeys --import SKYPE-GPG-KEY

The libsecret package is called lib64secret1_0 in Mageia 5 so the skype package needs to be installed by ignoring dependencies.

Installing the package was done with:
LANGUAGE=C rpm -iv --nodeps skypeforlinux-64.rpm

The newer skype version (so far) seems to work correctly.

Hope this saves time to someone else trying to update skype.

I'd suggest atm to ship ghetto skype that supports 32 bits also. It does not support video calls though, but works for what i tried.

The Skype 5.3.0.1 lacks lots of features present in the 4.3 version. The feature I miss the most is chat history. It also takes over 400 MiB of RAM from the start and it keeps growing and after a few chats and calls it was already over 900 MiB. Skype 5.3.0.1 is a great f**k you from Microsoft to GNU/Linux users!

Does anyone know of any FOSS that speaks Skype or any way to bridge Skype to XMPP?

Hm that explains the crazy RAM usage I experienced yesterday...

purple-skypeweb might be worth a try, it's a Pidgin plugin for Skype. Our version seems to be a bit old, I'll see if I can update it to 1.4: https://github.com/EionRobb/skype4pidgin/tree/master/skypeweb

What's the difference between starting to use Pidgin or starting to use another Skype client? As long as it does the job?

AFAICT pidgin (with plugin) does not support video, only IM so for me it's a non-starter.

In my quest to find a replacement for Skype video calls, I just tested appear.in and it works really well so far and is very user friendly.
It supports screen sharing and multi user conference calls. I used Google chrome at one end with Firefox at the other - both machines running Mga 6.
Full screen video is selectable once connected.

The libsecret in Mageia 6 has the same name as in Mageia 5, but is another version: 0.18-4 in M5, 0.18-5.2 in M6.
The result is that the current Skype (downloaded two days ago) installs perfectly normally (without --nodeps or --force) in M6.

Shame it's useless - except for audio only or using up Skypeout credit already paid for.

Re. #13 I had a full hour video chat with a friend in Barbados (I am in UK) with almost perfect lip sync and no glitches, pixellation or any other issues.
This never happened with Skype.

So I think the days of Skype are over for me. YMMV but I don't think so.

Is it a plan to have a "get-skype" for the new skypeforlinux?
If not, we can close this report.
