Description Robert Munro 2017-06-04 14:18:19 CEST
Description of problem:
The cdrkit (wodim) package fails with a write I/O error while trying to write CD/DVD discs under Linux 4.x kernels on Mageia 5. However, it still works under Linux 3.x kernels.
See the following Mageia forum thread for a detailed problem description:
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11722

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
cdrkit-1.1.11 and k3b-2.0.3

How reproducible:
Attempt to write (burn) a CD or DVD using either the cdrkit (wodim) utility or the K3b CD/DVD creation utility on a Mageia 5 system with a Linux 4.x kernel. The attempt will fail with a write I/O error. It works under Linux 3.x kernels.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Place a blank CD or DVD disk in an ATAPI DVD drive connected to the system.
2. Issue the command: cdrecord dev=/dev/sr0 speed=0 -sao <source file>
Or open the K3b application, select a source file, "burn image" and Start.
3. The cdrecord command or K3b utility will fail with a write I/O error.

If I didn't misunderstand (I read only part of the related forums thread), this is an upstream cdrkit issue.

Please remove the "UPSTREAM" keyword if I'm wrong.

Assigning to the registered maintainer.

Robert Munro: ping! Can you tend to Marja's requests?
Comment 3 Robert Munro 2017-07-05 19:36:13 CEST
I think she is correct that this is a problem for the upstream cdrkit maintainer.
Comment 4 Charles Edwards 2017-07-05 20:07:14 CEST
Upstream is https://github.com/Distrotech/cdrkit
Latest commit 7b4bb72 on Oct 17, 2010

Taps has been blown but no one took the time to bury it.

Yes, it does appear that there is no longer any upstream support for the package cdrkit. However, Mageia still has a bug because cdrkit and K3b no longer work to burn CD and DVD discs in many modern DVD writer devices under Linux 4.x kernels.

Since cdrkit and K3b *do* still work under Linux 3.9 kernels, I will speculate that the Linux kernel maintainers deleted some functionality in the 4.x kernels, and that support was not really 'obsolete', but is still needed by cdrkit / K3b.

I am using Mageia 5 with kernel '4.4.74-desktop-1.mga5 #1 SMP Mon Jun 26 07:50:58 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64' and can use K3b Version 2.0.3 to burn a DVD.

I successfully used it a few minutes ago to burn the Mageia-6-x86_64-DVD.iso to a DVD
