High I have been told in alt.os.linux.mageia that the gl message is just a nuisance message. and that the libvdpau is not really needed (altough after I installed it, the cli message from vlc said a file was loaded from /lib64/vdpau/) It seems that the reinstall put the line play-and-exit=1 into .config/vlc/vlcrc. Setting it to 0 now stopped vlc from exiting if it had no file to play, so I could open it from the desktop icon. Note that I cannot find this option anywhere in the preferences options in vlc. especially the pay-and-exit one, since the desktop icon is pretty useless with it set to 1. So, it seems the solutions are small but it would probably be good to put them into the vlc package. Found the setting. Tools/Preferences. In the lower left, select All instead of Simple, then select Playlist. On the right, one of the options is to play and exit. The option is not selected on a fresh install of vlc on m6 or in my m5 install. While the play and exit option is in ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc, it's commented out, so has no effect. The --play-and-exit is also available when running vlc from the command line, but it does not alter the vlcrc setting. No idea how the option was selected. In short, I can not reproduce the problem. For anyone running into this in the future, finding this bug report a work around is to run vlc from the command line with the option --no-play-and-exit CC:

davidwhodgins For me, vlc was running fine for many months on cauldron. It was only after the update to vlc-3.0.0-0.git.6.mga6.tainted.src.rpm two days ago that that play-and-exit began. Perhaps it is fixed in .8.mga6 (although installing that version did not fix the bug) but it is certain that I did not enable that play-and-exit. Thanks for finding the play-and-exit option. I looked at the All but did not find it. I can confirm that vlc works fine for me on an up-to-date Cauldron, and play-and-exit is disabled by default. Not sure what went wrong for w unruh, let's keep this open and see if we get duplicate bug reports. This bug can probably be closed. after the save and exit was deselected, vlc is working. I also have no idea how it got selected-- I did not do it-- but without any smoking gun, this bug report is useless. Maybe just one bit that toppled over :-) Closing as WORKDFORME, it can be reopened if needed. Status:
