Which Desktop environment do you use? And which display manager? (I know plasma5 started showing a cogwheel with a K in it on my laptop, recently, after logging into plasma5 with sddm. However, for me it's a big bouncing cogwheel, not a small one). CC:

Thank you for your quick reply.
First I am new to Mageiv and Linux. I am a computer user not not an expert and have very little knowledge of it,s inner workings.
The desktop is KDE. The display manager must have come from the Mageia installation disk and is the one for an ACER laptop.
Sorry I cant be more helpful. As you say it,s unlikely to be a virus I,ll not worry to much about it. I wonder if it is possible to wind back or reset the computer so that it uses a start up process from before this problem.
Thanking You

(In reply to Alan Moss from comment #4) > Created attachment 8966 [details] > picture as request Thanks :-) It is different than I first thought. When you use the KDE or Plasma5 buttons to log out or shutdown your computer, KDE (in Mageia 5) or Plasma5 (in cauldron / Mageia 6) will try to remember which applications are running, and restart them when you reboot or log in again. The bouncing icon probably comes from one of those applications. Do you still see it if you exit all applications, then wait a bit, and then reboot? I usually do close all applications before I switch off. I have tried what you suggest several times, It makes no difference the little icon is still there. Is there any way I can get the computer to show me what applications are running? Hi Alan, I think you are running Mageia 5 not Cauldron (looking at the background in your image). In a terminal please post the output of: cat /etc/mageia-release If it is 5 you can edit the "version" field at the top of the page. You can see what is running before you shut down with: su pstree Look for an instance of drakconf (MCC's real name). Also look in systemsettings (the crossed tools icon in the panel launchers) and go to the startup and shutdown section and in the "Desktop session" section try setting it to always start with an empty session. See how that goes. CC:

zen25000 I just realized that the icon looks like konqueror. Thanks Barry. konqueror was on my computer. It's a application I have never used, but I may have opened it to see what it is, so I have uninsulated it. this has made no difference. Again thanks for your efforts. As it seems that this problem is not what I feared, Some kind of virus or malware attack, (I still think Windows) Please Leave it as something that I installed when I was pressing buttons to see what they do.
