Description Renato Dali 2016-12-11 03:06:39 CET
Description of problem:

When installing Mageia 6 sta1, one can press Esc and enter text mode. Booting the "text" image leads to a text-based installation, which is necessary on an old netbook.

Right from the start there's a text message instructing to select:
"text" for text-based installation
"linux" for graphical-mode and
"linux vga=785" for graphical/low resolution

The words inside quotes are actually highlighted in Mageia 5.

Mageia 6 writes something like 07text07, which means that either color controls are wrong (e.g. missing initial Esc or something) or the functionality was not activated.

Later in installation -- in the final screen where all configs (timezone, language, keyboard, etc.) are reviewed -- a mess occurs on the screen when one needs e.g. to change the keyboard from "Brazilian ABNT-2" to "Português".

Also, that initial screen with image selection quickly disappears. I suggest including a pause to allow the user to read the entire message.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

It's the Mageia 6 sta1 installer.

How reproducible:

Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Insert and boot Mga6 sta1 DVD.
2. Press Esc at first screen shown. Then OK going to text mode.
3. Type text to boot the installer in textmode.

The hardware is a simple but efficient Geode based netbook described in Bug 10385 (it has 512MB RAM).

The bug is mostly annoying at the final configuration reviewing phase, but one can just use without much visual feedback and still proceed with the installation -- hence I think it's a minor one.

The first issue looks like bug 18316, which was fixed, after Mageia 6sta1 was released:

http://gitweb.mageia.org/software/drakx/commit/?id=faa380c2ed0ce9b5094750897db086e058225f2b

I'm not sure fixing it in images/make_boot_img was enough to fix it for non-netinstall isos, too, though :-/

Can you try whether you can reproduce that issue with a current cauldron netinstall.iso (boot.iso) install, and, if so, take a screenshot of the mess?

Do you mind filing an enhancement request for that, and attach a picture of the mentioned screen to that report?

Thanks :-)

First, Marja, you are right. It's the same issue. Congrats on catching that.

I apologize that I didn't find it yesterday and thank you for your patience with people that make such mistakes when reporting errors.

About the mess, it may be related to the bug 18316, too. Besides highlighting and color-changing sequences, there are cursor positioning codes and these might not be working, too. I will try the netinstall, as you mention (burning as I write this).

If the issue persists (erm, after I use the corrected iso) then I'll attach a screenshot -- otherwise I'll make a note about this being a duplicate of said bug.

About the enhancement request, I'll do it, too.

Thanks for your assistance and please keep up the good work.

Also, congrats to everyone on the recent 5.1 release.

Well, I'd better have patience ... I make such mistakes, too ;-)

Thanks for your bug reports, they already helped to get at least a dozen bugs fixed :-)

Perfect!

Well, it's much more impressive to see how Mageia developers show love for what they do. It's very inspiring, in fact.

After the "netinstall", I noticed the issue was in fact solved -- highlights and colors were back and beautiful. Therefore the present bug can be

The problems with screen visual mess do continue and I expect to open another bug in the near future (I got some photos), as well as an enhancement request about giving the user more time to read the text instructions.

Thanks, Marja. Have a good week!

The important part of this bug is a duplicate of bug 18316, as correctly inferred by Marja.

There is another issue which will be filed in a separate bug.

Issue about garbled/messed screen reported in bug 19928.

Requests for enhancement created in bug 19929 and bug 19930.
