Maybe the mix of kernels and vbox stuff on the iso caused this?)

Please attach /root/drakx/report.bug.xz from that install, Herman.

Was this an install on real hw, or not?

This was an install on real hardware, no vbox involved.

Herman, did this still occur with the most recent ISO?

No, it did not.
However, I switched choices I make during installation. Before I installed Xfce AND KDE environments (used only Xfce afterwards, but some of the KDE progs), now I choose Mate only.
If you feel this could make a difference, I'll do the installation over "the old way".

Thanks. I really wouldn't expect the desktop choice to make a difference, but if you have some spare time it would be nice to confirm this is fixed with the same choices as before.

Did a clean install again with the Xfce/KDE desktop choices. Confirm the kmod error did not occur anymore during installation.
One glitch I mention just in case someone ever has the same problem: the first restart after installation (which is a warm restart) failed with "root cannot be mounted ...... VFS"
Forcing a cold restart resulted in a working system, following warm restart was also OK, so problem seems te be gone. Maybe due to HW glitch, this laptop is about 10 years old.
In the mean time, started clean install with Mate again, as I want to get more familiar wit that desktop.
