Description Kristoffer Grundström 2016-09-15 01:41:30 CEST
Description of problem: Firefox 45.3.0 won't play the videoclip from tv4play.se even thou Flashplayer is installed and Firefox does see it in about:config.
I checked if the file libflashplayer.so exists in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins and it does exist, but it's owned by root and root group has the rights to it. That hinders the flashplayer to work on tv4play.se. I even tested to run a brand new instance of Firefox with the -p flag, but the clip still wouldn't play.

I solved the issue by replacing the libflashplayer.so with the beta-version of it from Adobe Labs and then restarted Firefox and the clip started to play again.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 11.4.0

How reproducible: Everytime with a newly created user account.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox 45.3.0.
2. Type about:plugins and press Enter.
3. Scroll down to the bottom to find that the Flashplayer is installed and found.
4. Now go to http://www.tv4play.se/ and create a new user account (the clip won't play otherwise).
5. Login to that user account.
6. Click to play any clip on that site and you'll get a message saying that Flashplayer is missing and that you should click the button to install it.
7. Installing the offered flashplayer version does not help when you revisit the page again to play the clip.

I am sure there are a number of sites that don't work with old NPAPI Linux Flash.

You can uninstall flash-player-plugin and install freshplayerplugin and google-chrome-stable (or upstream Pepper Flash) to use Pepper Flash, which will fix this. At some point we may package the Pepper one (see Bug 18993), which would take care of this too. Also, as you know, Adobe is working on updating the NPAPI one, so there's no need for this bug report.

Closing as WORKSFORME due to the freshplayerplugin workaround.

Right, but flashplayer still gets preinstalled for the majority of Mageia 5 even thou freshplayerplugin is better if people want websites to work in Firefox. There are some people that doesn't want to use Google software so why should we be forced to install that just to make certain websites working OK?

Just saying......

That's a good point, that's why you should write emails to the staff of all those websites to tell them that there are people who doesn't want to use Adobe security wormholes, so why should we be forced to install such a collection of security bugs on our systems just to make certain websites working OK? HTML5 is there, works, they should use it, there's no alternative.

David Walser: Just make a note that I'm not trying to troll or to be rude towards you, but I installed both freshplayerplugin AND Google Chrome and went to the national newspaper Aftonbladet's website with Firefox (as that is my and many other peoples prefer webbrowser of choice) to watch a clip that WAS working fine with the new beta version of flashplayer, but with freshplayer in Firefox, the clip didn't work.

It fails to find the PPAPI backend for Pepperflash when looking in all the paths it could be in, therefor I really think that until we can confirm that freshplayerplugin and/or pepperflash works good on theese websites we should push the new beta of flashplayer plugin since it gets preinstalled anyway.

An extra note is to have flash-player-plugin replaced by freshplayerplugin on any installation of Mageia so we can get rid of this issue once and for all.

Google Chrome is only a temporary solution and Google Chrome can't be found in the official Mageia repos as of today so how would ordinary users install Google Chrome from rpmdrake if they don't know how to add the Google Chrome media from the Mageia forum post?

I'm not angry, but very disappointed about the suggestion to use Chrome when I don't share the company's view on privacy.

Yes, I know that Firefox is also sending my information to third parties, but I don't intend to install more webbrowsers just to get a clip working.

Here's another situation so you'll understand why I don't want to use a workaround when I already presented a fix:

Lets assume that you buy a brand new car.
If your brand new car breaks down because the fuel line/s to be replaced you don't go and buy another brand new car to get new fuel line/s, instead you go to a store and purchase new fuel line/s and replace it/them.

As a side note to this problem: There's no message (like a popup window) for a newbie trying out Mageia that tells them to install freshplayerplugin proposed to flash-player-plugin.

Is something done in Cauldron to preinstall freshplayerplugin together with Google Chrome (a program that isn't found in any of our repos) in the future?
