Description of problem:

Installed, and working LAN&WAN, HP 4502 printer/scanner cannot
be seen by HP Device Manager. Reports printer not found.
Probably related to it is Xsane cannot see printer/scanner.
When Xsane is launced the following error message is displayed:

HPLIP cannot detect devices in your network. This may be due to
existing firewall settings blocking the required ports like
(5353/udp). When you are in a trusted network environment, you
may open the ports for network services like mdns and slp in the
firewall. For detailed steps follow the link.

Firewall on test system is completely turned off.

I think that this is the existing bug#18992 which is the result of hplip assigning permissions to devices which require adding the user to the lp group

Yup, that fixed it. Why is this not set up at the install of the printer apps.
How is an end user supposed to know this?
