Description of problem:

The screens of Mageia 5 i586 or x86-64 VirtualBox guests with virtualbox-guest-additions installed don't get resized when the window is. They stay at their minimal viewport size. I installed all updates and restarted the guests and it still happens.

I also tried moving away /etc/X11/xorg.conf - didn't help. I recall it working in the past. 

This disrupts my work as a QA tester for mageia v5.

1. Install mageia 5 in vbox.
2. Resize the screen.

OK, an update - a fresh Mageia v5 x86-64 installation in a vbox VM (Classic DVD after installing the Xfce desktop) and after installing all updates is working fine in this respect (the screen gets resized fine). So now we'll need to find out where the systems differ that causes this bug in the relevant, erroneous, VM.

Yes, I do. Also tried toggling it off , resizing, toggling it on, resizing /etc. - it still does not work.

It sounds like you're using the modesetting X.org module instead of vboxvideo.  Boot with the nomodeset kernel command line parameter to fix this.  You may want to restore the xorg.conf you had.

I already restored the xorg.conf I had. Booting with the 'nomodeset' kernel command line parameter (given at the end) did not fix the problem. Does anyone have any other ideas? Is there any more information I can share?
