I speak for a bunch of users mainly with older laptops like dual-core and not more than 2gb of ram. We would like to have by default a patched kernel instead of the official one. The old Mandriva had a custom kernel and it was a great one, we were hoping to have one like that mainly included. The reason is that many of us use Mageia for desktops/laptops, and though I have heard the main kernel works better for servers and big hardware, it is not the case for us. The advantages of the pf patch or similar patches is well known. Please at least take it into consideration and provide a survey or a discussion among the staff and the users. Please keep in mind that one of the pros of linux is using it on older hardware. There is no need to change may Toshiba U300 dual core 64bit with 2gb of ram just to have a newer version of a distro. And it is bad to have lags on a system like this and a few tons of mb in swap. Thank you and greetings from Romania :) from former Mandriva users. Keep up the Mandrake spirit alive :) On step is a custom better working kernel. Those from OpenMandriva have more than one version of custom kernel.

Could you be more specific about what you are asking for? What is a "patched kernel"? Our various kernels are already patched to some extent. What do you want patched?

We already have the various kernel flavours:
- kernel-desktop
- kernel-desktop586
- kernel-linus (that's the unpatched one, but not the default one)
- kernel-server
- kernel-tmb

I mean with the pf-patch, but also, any kind of patched kernel is better than the main one. You should do whatever it takes to optimize it for desktop and not allow to use swap if it has enough memory, but not only this. There are a lot of patches, you should keep in mind 99% percent of Mageia users are from desktop/laptop and not server. I understand from the blog that the official kernel is the main one, and the patched one could be installed after that, so thats bad :) Put the patched one as main and the linus as option :) For further details check with Paolo Valente :) Bfq is the first request for a patch.

GReat guys! From what I understand from the blog the linus kernel is the main one, hope you will put Thomas's as official to boot with it, this is my observation now, from what you say here, otherwise, if the tmb is by default, DO make it clear in the release announcements. Thnks, this is all from me! Hope Mageia will live long and prosperous.

I was refferin to the Mageia blog. It was said there by Schultz, in one of his replies to me that the default kernel is Linus's, though Tmb can be installed afterwards. Thanks for clearing things out. Also you should consider mentioning this in your posts as it will atract more users.
