Description of problem:

The network interface:

 Intel Corporation|I210 Gigabit Network Connection [NETWORK_ETHERNET]

driven by the module "igb" goes down and up on a random basis, that can be every few minutes by heavy load of a few times a day on light load.

I understand it can be triggered by bad cables, router or hardware failing, but I am getting this messages on two different computers only sharing the same hardware ethernet (I210), same kernel and thus same driver: igb.

Duckducking around suggests to disable generic-segmentation-offload, tcp-segmentation-offload and generic-receive-offload

 ethtool -K enXXX gso off gro off tso off

but that does not change anything. Feels like a bug in the driver.

I am currently testing the latest version (found on intel website) and will report here.

After trying almost everything, such as compiling latest igb driver, changing kernel, playing with all possible options with ethtool, the guilty bastards end up being:

rx-vlan-offload: on
tx-vlan-offload: on

Everything is solved by disabling them:

ethtool -K enXXXX rxvlan off txvlan off

I have no idea why exactly, it may be related to igb which seems to strip the packets from the vlan tag, and the fact that I am using a modem as a bridge behind a router?

is this still happening with 4.4.13 kernel ?

Hi Thomas,
yes, I tried kernel 4.4.13, both server and desktop, with igb provided by the kernel and latest igb from intel upstream. The only way I do not get this link up/down is with vlan-offload off.

Mass-reassigning all bugs with "kernel" in the Source RPM field that are assigned to tmb, to the kernel packagers group, because tmb is currently MIA.

Thank you for having taken the needed time to report this issue!

Did this bug get fixed with or before the 4.4.114 kernel? If so, please change its status to RESOLVED - FIXED

If it didn't, then we regret that we weren't able to fix it in Mageia 5. Mageia 5 has officially reached its End of Life on December 31st, 2017 https://blog.mageia.org/en/2017/11/07/mageia-5-eol-postponed/
It only continued to get important security updates since then, because we are waiting for a big Plasma5 update in Mageia 6, that'll fix many of the Mageia 5 => 6 upgrade issues.

If you haven't seen that this bug got fixed, then please check whether this bug still exists in Mageia 6. If it does, then please change the Version (near the top, at the left) to "6". If you know it exists in Cauldron, then change Version to Cauldron. If you see it in both Cauldron and Mageia 6, then please set Version to Cauldron and add MGA6TOO on the Whiteboard.
