Description Herbert Poetzl 2016-05-05 17:05:33 CEST
Description of problem:

Since a few days (maybe some update, don't know how to check) the display locks
up after less than 12 hours. Only thing not locked is the mouse pointer which can move freely and changes shape depending on the windows.

Movie player can still be controlled (e.g. paused/resumed if it was the active application) but no display updates are visible.

Restarting gnome-shell gives a distorted display which is still locked/frozen and only the mouse is able to move.

Restarting the dm service (service dm restart) makes everything work again, but of course the session is lost.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-shell-3.14.3-8.1.mga5

How reproducible:
Since about three days it happens every 8-10 hours.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Login into gnome
2. Wait
3.

The only update which seems 'related' was firefox-38.8.0-1.mga5.x86_64.

Since it started happening, I reverted the kernel to 3.19.8 because I suspected that one first, but it happened again.

I've now switched to xfce4 to see if it is really gnome related or if it happens there too, will report back tomorrow.

Thanks,
Herbert

Seems so, since I switched to xfce4 everything is fine, no lockups no freeze, no problems.

Best,
Herbert

Assinging to all packagers collectively, because we don't really have a Gnome maintainer

Btw, I don't manage to find any recent Mga5 update in my "updates-announce" folder of which I know it may have caused this

Can you please try Gnome again, to see whether you can reproduce it with a new user?
