Description Andrew Keens 2016-04-09 06:33:57 CEST
Description of problem:
At the moment during the Mageia install in individual package selection you're only given an option to go with icewm-light, which, from my point of view, is a little too limited (you're not given the full taskbar (only a toolbar) with clock and applets, like a must-have keyboard applet for those who need to switch languages. Besides having the icewm-light after the install is a little misleading, cuz the Minimal install section clearly states you gonna get icewm, see http://doc.mageia.org/installer/5/en/content/minimal-install.html. i didn't even know there is icewm-light before that! And they are two different packages.

All in all it should not take too much extra space out of the box, but would add up to make it a complete experience for minimalists out of the box and to avoid some confusion while editing icewm configs.

Thanks for your hardwork!
Cheers!

@ Andrew,

Thanks for the report, I wasn't aware either that icewm-light exists, nor that that's the one that gets installed in a minimal install instead of icewm.

It makes sense to keep it like that for a minimal install. However, we'll need to update our documentation and tell that only icewm-light gets installed.

CC'ing docteam for that.

Andrew, icewm is on the isos. Do I correctly understand that you could not find it in this screen:
http://doc.mageia.org/installer/5/en/content/choosePackagesTree.html ?

Thanks for the quickest reply!
Just tried to go through the installation process for both Mageia 5 and Mageia 6 dev 1 once again, and I can verify that both of them only have icewm-light during the initial installation. attaching a screenshot for Mageia 6 for you at http://imgur.com/IzMEcxd (it alphabetically shows the relevant segment of other graphical enviroments submenu)
I see your point of keeping things minimal, but the problem I had (before I figured out it was icewm-light) is doing the regular editing stuff, activating the "ShowTaskBar=1" business just to find out it still wouldn't work. Was just a little confusing. Could as well resolve some similar problems in the future.
Either way, once again thanks for your time and efforts, guys!

@ Thierry

What decides which packages can be individually selected to be installed?

In other words: why is icewm not in the list of selectable/selected packages, while icewm-light is, and both are available on the isos?

It looks like most of the actual data is part of icewm-light, while the icewm package contains only the non-light binaries: http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/icewm/current/SPECS/icewm.spec?view=markup

That doesn't explain why icewm doesn't appear in the package selection list though.

Assigning to Thierry, because he'll most likely understand why icewm cannot be selected, even in case it's caused by something outside in stage2

It's because of this in rpmsrate (meta-task package):
CAT_X
  5 xdm icewm-light

I think the most sensible place to address this would be to have the full icewm installed when you specifically click the checkbox for "Other Graphical Desktops" (missing from the screenshot in our documentation BTW...you must have taken that from an ISO install and not a netinstall).

I think adding it to CAT_GRAPHICAL_DESKTOP would accomplish that. Maybe change it to the following:
CAT_GRAPHICAL_DESKTOP
  5 icewm
  4 task-windowmaker
  3 afterstep fluxbox
  2 epplets enlightenment ethemes
  2 wmnet
  1 lesstif-mwm
