Description Antoine Dumondel 2016-04-05 23:06:30 CEST
Description of problem:
During the initialisation of the system, after BIOS but before the splash screen appear, a white screen is here and nothing can be done except open a TTY console (here it's possible to make some update as usual but nothing changes).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
The issue appears since the update which was release the 02/04/2016 (french format).

How reproducible:
Just boot your laptop after this update.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make update
2. Reboot
3. Be blocked

More : I don't remember which driver I'm using (Nouveau or Nvidia, may be the first one).

Hi Antoine
What version of Mageia are you running?
Are you seeing the boot loader screen?

Hi Nic,
Sorry, I thinking it was indicated. I'm using Cauldron.
Yes indeed, After BIOS, GRUB2 is present. I can choose Mageia or the other distro. After this, something is running before a full white screen.
Comment 3 Nic Baxter 2016-04-07 04:00:45 CEST
OK what dm and de are you using? ie is it sddm and plasma?
Comment 4 Antoine Dumondel 2016-04-07 07:47:33 CEST
I've forget to say it to, sorry. I'm Using KDE Plasma 5, SDDM to.
After have choosed Mageia on GRUB2, I used "Echap" to look what happen (I don't have time to take a photo to put it here, sorry).
The line before White Screen is something about Nouveau and Chipset.
Comment 5 Marja Van Waes 2016-04-09 17:34:55 CEST
So the white screen appears _before_ the SDDM screen appears, correct?

Can you please attach your

     /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and also journalctl.txt that is the result of (as root)

     journalctl -b > journalctl.txt

@ Akien

Assigning to you again :-þ

2016:04:09:18:51 < admel> marja, how would you that I attach my xorg.conf ? I can't have access to the logscreen or any graphical interface
2016:04:09:18:59 < admel> I only can see : nouveau : unknow chipset. The spalshscreen try to launch itself but crash for a white screen.

Sorry, I had missed that sddm never started at all :-(

When in a TTY, you can:
* insert a USB key
* check with "dmesg" whether that USB key is e.g. /dev/sdb, or /dev/sdc, or ...
* if it's /dev/sdc, then do: "mkdir sdc1"
* become root
* do: "mount /dev/sdc1 sdc1"
* do: "cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf sdc1/
* do: "journalctl -b > sdc1/journalctl.txt"
* do: "cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log sdc1/"
* do: "umount sdc1"
and you can unplug the USB key and attach the files in this report

It would be nice, too, to get the output of:

  lspcidrake -v | grep Card

e.g. by doing, with the USB key still mounted:

   lspcidrake -v | grep Card > sdc1/lspcidrakeCard.txt

@ Antoine

Yesterday morning on IRC I understood that you were busy trying to get the requested information.

If you didn't succeed, then there's a chance my instruction were wrong or not clear enough.

Please don't hesitate to tell if the instructions did not work!

Morning,

Thank you for your help marja.
You can have a look on the log now :) :

In the journalctl -b output, I see:

avril 16 15:37:15 localhost kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: unknown chipset (118010a2)
avril 16 15:37:15 localhost kernel: nouveau: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -12

Btw, attaching your journalctl output, so it won't get lost.
In bug reports we prefer to have the requested files attached to the report, in stead of uploaded somewhere else, unless a file is even too big when compressed.

Antoine, could you please also attach your:

  /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(The button to add attachments is on the left above the description or comment 0 of this report)

I had missed this :-[ So everything worked well until you updated your system on the 2nd of April!

Did you agree to remove packages because of missing dependencies, or because of conflicts?

Starting end of March and continuing till after you updated, there have been a lot of KDE updates.
AFAICS, there were no kernel updates, nor updates for X11 server or drivers when you updated (unless you hadn't updated for a long time).
Apart from that, I don't see any evidence that X crashes and guess that if it had crashed, the screen would have turned black instead of white.

Now wondering whether this line has something to do with the problem:

avril 16 15:37:19 localhost sddm-greeter[1364]: file:///usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze/Main.qml: File not found

@ neoclust

Do you mind helping?
