I re-installed kernel-desktop-4.4.5-2 from another mirror. I got the same result, but the shutdown was interesting: There was a firmware error. I have completely forgotten to mention: It was on the Intel Compute Stick. The Belkin ethernet adapter on Intels Compute Stick works with kernel-desktop-4.4.6-1, but the WiFi still hangs. Incorrect statement. The ethernet adapter worked after the first boot, but twice after that it has been hanging after a boot. Would you please give some details of the ethernet adapter and the wifi chip.Either copy the details from hardware in MCC or from a teminal run: lsusb > lsusb.txt and then run: lspci > lspci.txt and upload the files to this report CC:

The ethernet eventually came up after a long time.

marja11 It you have the ethernet and wifi adapters plugged in when you did this? There is no mention of Belkin or wifi in any of the files. The ethernet adapter is asix : ASIX Elec. Corp.|AX88x72A The WiFi is run by the processor, brobably through iosf_mbi : Intel Corporation|Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series SoC Transaction Register I have forgotten the name of the driver. But I am not really into the details. The reason the ethernet was vely slow to come up was probably that the WiFi driver (whatever its name is) was hanging. The WiFi comes up when I pull the ethernet adapter in kernel-desktop-4.1.15 Something must have happened between 4.1.15 and 4.4.5. The device is an Intell Compute Stick. It is the 3. party driver r8723bs.ko.xz in the kernel. It is much smaller in 4.4.6 than in 4.1.15. Something must have been left out, or it has been re-coded. WiFi on the Intel ComputeStick does not work in kernel-desktop-4.4.8-2 It only works in kernel-desktop-4.1.5-2 Sorry. 4.1.15-2 Can you attach dmesg from 4.1.15-2 and 4.4.8-2 Created attachment 7696 [details]

dmesg for kernel-desktop-4.1.15-2
The wifi applet came up.
But, unfortunately the system crashed while I was looking at dmesg.

wifi-compute-stick-4.4.8-2
It never found my acces point. It kept hanging.
I can only say that my USB ethernet controller works with 4.1.15-2.

after a long wait for wifi in 4.4.8-2
I waited for a long time after re-boot into 4.4.8-2.
Finally the ethernet applet came up.
(In reply to Bjarne Thomsen from comment #11) > It is the 3. party driver r8723bs.ko.xz in the kernel. > It is much smaller in 4.4.6 than in 4.1.15. > Something must have been left out, or it has been > re-coded. Yeah, the driver revision used in 4.1 series had firmware builtin from included header code, something that got cleaned up for 4.4 series I have added the missing firmwares in rtlwifi-firmware-20160429-1.mga5 I also updated the driver and added some more Baytrail-specific fixes in kernel-4.4.8-3.mga5 currently building It sort of works with kernel-desktop-4.4.8-3. First I configured WiFi. Then I pulled the ethernet cable, and the WiFi icon appeared. Later I re-booted, still without the ethernet cabel, but i reported that something was not working. I turned off the power and re-booted. Now it works. It reproduces. I have made a re-start twice. In both cases WiFi did not start. Then I made 3 shutdowns followed by the start button. In all 3 cases did the WiFi connection start. Why is that? Should I attach a dmesg after the failed re-start? Bad news. This morning the WiFi was hanging. I disconnec/reconnected, but is was still hanging. I connected the ethernet. It is working. Created attachment 7751 [details]
dmesg for kernel-4.4.9-1
I have now booted with the latest kernel-4.4.9-1 on Intels Compute Stick.
The WiFi connection came up, and it seems to work, but...
dmesg has a call trace near the end.
Something is not quite right. I am monitoring its functionality.
Previously it has worked for some time.
I have discovered that the WiFi only works if the USB Belkin ethernet adapter is inserted in the USB port during boot of the Stick. The cable does not have to be inserted. More bad news. While surfing using WiFi theconnection froze, and I had to re-boot. The WiFi driver is really buggy. Mass-reassigning all bugs with "kernel" in the summary that are still assigned to tmb (or wrongly assigned to someone with "tmb" in his e-mail address) to the kernel packagers group, but without adding "kernel" to the SRPM field. Please reassign if needed, or add kernel to the SRPM field if this is correct. Assignee:

kernel Hi Bjarne, Thank you for having taken the needed time to report this issue and for all additional information you gave! Did this bug get fixed? If so, please change its status to RESOLVED - FIXED If it didn't, then we regret that we weren't able to fix it in Mageia 5. Mageia 5 has officially reached its End of Life on December 31st, 2017 https://blog.mageia.org/en/2017/11/07/mageia-5-eol-postponed/ It only continued to get important security updates since then, because we are waiting for a big Plasma5 update in Mageia 6, that'll fix many of the Mageia 5 => 6 upgrade issues. If you haven't seen that this bug got fixed, then please check whether this bug still exists in Mageia 6. If it does, then please change the Version (near the top, at the left) to "6". If you know it exists in Cauldron, then change Version to Cauldron. If you see it in both Cauldron and Mageia 6, then please set Version to Cauldron and add MGA6TOO on the Whiteboard. Thanks, Marja No reply, so closing as OLD since Mageia 5 is no longer maintained. Status:
