Got my system to run the live gnome x86_64 by ...
alt+ctrl+f2
login as root
Run "XFdrake", selecting xorg vesa, and a resolution suitable for the
graphics card/monitor. Exit from XFdrake.
logout as root
login as live
run "startx startgnome -- :1"
wait ... Gnome eventually starts.

Comment 2 Ben McMonagle 2016-01-27 08:46:42 CET
a less convoluted method:

ctrl+alt+F3 [tty3?]
login as "root"
run "drakx11" and setup x-server, then "ok". wait for the prompt
run "systemctl restart gdm"

@ Ben
@ Dave

Which video cards do you have? Or give the output of:

  lspcidrake -v | grep Card

That fails unless I change the driver to vesa
