It won't start an Xorg server.
I think the proper command to start Gnome from a VT is just:
startx startgnome
I have used this for a few weeks because of GDM trouble, and worked fine (except for some days where there was a mismatch between gnome-shell and gnome-session).CC:

I'd close this one as INVALID as the sequence in comment 0 doesn't make sense. Regularly startgnome runs /etc/gnome/gnomerc which runs gnome-session. If you want to start it via xinit then "echo 'exec gnome-session' > ~/.xinitrc" and running xinit would make sense (and that works). But that's not a regular testcase, is it? Status:
