Description Herbert Poetzl 2011-06-10 00:46:56 CEST
Description of problem:
F-Spot shows really bad performance and becomes unresponsive when downloading thumbnails or images.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
f-spot-0.8.2-1.mga1

How reproducible:
always here

Steps to Reproduce:
1. atach digital camera (on gnome desktop)
2. select 'Open F-Spot Photo Manager'
3. select camera from 'Choose Import source...'
at this point nothing seems to happen, an photo icon is shown
4. resize the separation bar to give more space to the thumbnails
(which by default seems to be 0)
this already hangs while resizing because it seems to start
downloading thumbnails now (takes up to 60 seconds till the resize happens)
5. scroll down (hangs again, up to 40 seconds)
6. cancel or import also takes ages to happen

the thumbnail download seems to take like 10-20 seconds for each thumb, as a comparison, gphoto2 downloads 220 thumbs in 21 seconds.

I think that it's an upstream bug.

I might be looking over it, or no one ever reported it:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced;version=0.8.2;product=f-spot

@ Herbert
Can you start f-spot from the terminal and see any relevant messages, when this happens?

Do you see (if you happened to check) the same problem in Mga2Alpha1?

I've updated the system to Cauldron (not sure how that relates to Mga2Alpha*) and now f-spot doesn't recognize the camera (Canon EOS 10D) at all, thus it isn't possible to import any photos anymore.

Thanks for trying with cauldron. If you just updated the system, you updated to Mga2alpha3.

gphoto still works? If not, what is the output of lsusb?

We don't have a f-spot maintainer atm, sorry, but as you can see here, as well the amount of maintained packages as the percentage of unmaintained packages is still dropping

Edit: the amount of *un*maintained packages

after fixing the device permissions manually (Bug 4177), gphoto2 (commandline) works.

any other (maintained) photo importer/manager for the gnome desktop?

We have shotwell, a photo organizer designed for GNOME

I don't know the package (I use KDE), all I know is that it replaced f-spot when Ubuntu 10.10 was released.

Anyway, we do have a maintainer for it :)

3 months later..... is this bug still valid?
Comment 9 Manuel Hiebel 2012-11-05 16:53:53 CET
This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life.
In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing
updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it
remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to
fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later
Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not
be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see
this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia,
you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version
of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime,
sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia
release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 1 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''1st December''. Mageia 1 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
