Description Bert Moore 2015-09-01 18:41:23 CEST
Description of problem:
If during installation of the 64 bit version of Mageia 5 at the MEDIA SELECTION DISPLAY a network source is not selected the installation will fail. There is no warning that you need to select a repository that contains 32 bit software. Installation will proceed as though nothing is wrong. Only a reboot will show the failed installation.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Install Mageia 5 64 bit DVD ISO
At the Media Selection screen make no selection

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Insert 64 bit DVD iso into dvd drive
2.Start computer
3.At the media selection screen make no selection or accept default none.
4 Continue with installation.

Possible solution:
At the Media Selection screen add the following; Warning the 64 bit DVD iso contains only 64 bit and noarch packages. You must add an online mirror, the installer will find the needed 32 bit packages it needs for a successful installation.

First please attach the corresponding /root/drakx/report.bug.xz file

Secondly, I'm pretty sure you didn't do an installation but an upgrade and you'd previously installed some 32 bit packages, didn't you?
Else there wouldn't be any issue at all...

In that case, it might be better to use the dual ISO with network media.

First I did a new installation and the 64 bit DVD contains only 64 bit and noarch software. The only way to get a complete installation which included 32 bit software was to select either ftp or http and select the appropriate server.
Is it that difficult to put the warning on the media selection screen when doing a 64 bit installation.

Because there is no need for such a warning, as Mageia 5 can of course be installed offline using the 64bit DVD and no 32bit repo. It would be utterly broken if it couldn't, and we did some QA testing before releasing a major version...

So what Thierry is asking is how it happens that in _your case_ you could not install without enabling 32bit repos, a possible explanations being if it was actually an upgrade and you had 32bit stuff install that needed updating.

If it was a bare metal install with the default installation parameters, then there is something strange going on, which is why the installation report from /root/drakx/report.bug.xz would be valuable.

I am sorry to have bothered you, I thought I was doing a good thing. For the last time it was a clean install instead of an upgrade. I had a horrible experience upgrading with Mageia 4. I noticed the installation used 32 bit files and when I reviewed the contents of the 64 bit DVD ISO I found only 64 bit and nonarch files. Then I found the Installation with Drakx and discovered on page 27 the answer. I tried it, it worked so trying to help others I submitted the bug. Again my apologies for bothering you.

You are not bothering me, I was simply stating that your tentative explanation, though meant to help us get in the right track, is hopefully not true in the general case. Most users are able to install 64bit without having to enable additional repositories.

So if you could provide the data asked for, and also be more explicit on what you mean with "the installation used 32 bit files". What files, and what is the error if you don't enable 32bit repos? How do you perform the install, with a live DVD or classical installer? If using the classical installer, which DE do you install, which custom categories?

But most of all, again, we'd need you to attach the file in /root/drakx/report.bug.xz to this bug report, since most answers should be in there already.

1. I do not know how to attach the root file you are requesting. Tell me how and I will do it.
2. Installation used the classical installer.
3. I installed the following DEs, KDE, Cinnamon, Gnome, Mate, and LXQt.
4. The failed installation occurred with Mageia 4 not Mageia 5.

Sorry that we never replied :-(

You would have needed to open a konsole or terminal, become root and copy that file to your home partition, e.g. with:

   cp -a /root/drakx/report.bug.xz /home/bert/

after that you could have clicked on the "Add an attachment" button at the top of all comments in your bug report, and used the "Browse" button in the screen you then see, to navigate to /home/bert/report.bug.xz

Ouch, Mageia 4 has reached it's end of life.

If you hit this problem again when installing Mga5, then please do attach that file, anyway

Closing this report as OLD, because this was about Mageia 4 and we don't have the needed logs, anyway.

Please reopen if you hit this problem again in Mageia 6sta1 or later, and attach the requested /root/drakx/report.bug.xz, as explained in comment #7
