Description Tony Blackwell 2011-06-07 08:15:57 CEST
When unplugging a running laptop, a popup message tells me the battery is discharging. I'd expect this to go away when I plug in the power again. It doesn't, and if I've moved the laptop a couple of times between powerpoints before using it, there will be a popup still there for each move.

I don't recall seeing this pre-fork - my memory is that such windows closed themselves.

I know this is trivial, but for appearance would be worth fixing to make the
screen tidier.

To demonstrate, disconnect a running laptop from mains power.

Which environnement are you using ? KDE, GNOME, LXDE, XFCE ?
I can't reproduce here on a i586 KDE laptop & netbook.

Acer Extenza 5620Z laptop, gdm. gnome. I log in graphical screen initially as root, use that account to mount an encrypted user partition containing the user home directory, start up a 2nd graphical session with gdmflexiserver from the root account, then log in as the user (session is on Ctrl_Alt_F8 ) See the problem as the user on this 2nd session.

The initial comment is still valid, that with identical scenario I don't recall seeing this behaviour pre-fork.

Thanks for your prompt interest

screen shot of battery messages

Further info: When I disconnect the power from the running laptop, gnome puts up a message in top right screen corner, white text on black background, not a usual gnome window, (something more low-level?) re battery discharging. This vanishes as soon as I plug the power back in.

Most but not all of the time, it also produces a popup window either in the running session (e.g. Ctrl_Alt_F8), or the other inactive screen behind F7, or both or neither. These popup windows have the format of usual gnome windows and contain the identical text to the transient white-on-black window mentioned above, but they don't go away on reconnecting power.

I've attached a screen shot after a few unplug/replug cycles.

I haven't looked at the status of this on gnome3. Probably best to close it. I'll look when I get a chance and re-open if still a current issue.
