Description Rolf Pedersen 2015-07-06 18:57:13 CEST
I'm trying to get a caching nameserver going; used to play with djbdns but don't have a networking expertise.

Anyway, reading through the FAQ and man pages, it appears deadwood is to be called via duende in

[rolf@localhost ~]$ ls /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 07-06-2015 06:21 K48deadwood -> ../init.d/deadwood*

It was not running after boot, however. So, I called the script as root but it failed:

[root@localhost rolf]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood start
Starting deadwood (via systemctl): Job for deadwood.service failed. See "systemctl status deadwood.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
                                                                                 [FAILED]

[root@localhost rolf]# systemctl status deadwood.service -l
â deadwood.service - LSB: Start the Deadwood recursive DNS server
   Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Mon 2015-07-06 09:17:06 PDT; 51s ago
  Process: 32061 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood start (code=exited, status=127)

Jul 06 09:17:06 localhost.localdomain deadwood[32061]: Starting Deadwood service: /etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood: line 39: /usr/local/bin/duende: No such file or directory

Jul 06 09:17:06 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: deadwood.service: control process exited, code=exited status=127
Jul 06 09:17:06 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: Start the Deadwood recursive DNS server.
Jul 06 09:17:06 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Unit deadwood.service entered failed state.
Jul 06 09:17:06 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: deadwood.service failed.

In /etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood: line 39: /usr/local/bin/duende

I changed to actual path, /usr/sbin/duende and

[root@localhost rolf]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/deadwood start
Starting deadwood (via systemctl): Warning: Unit file of deadwood.service changed on disk, 'systemctl daemon-reload' recommended.
                                                                                 [ OK ]

[rolf@localhost ~]$ ps aux | grep deadwood
root 7264 0.0 0.0 4244 84 ? S 09:19 0:00 /usr/sbin/duende /usr/sbin/deadwood
99 7265 0.0 0.0 4872 1300 ? S 09:19 0:00 /usr/sbin/deadwood
66 7266 0.0 0.0 4248 1208 ? S 09:19 0:00 /usr/sbin/duende /usr/sbin/deadwood
rolf 7402 0.0 0.0 13712 2180 pts/3 S+ 09:55 0:00 grep --color deadwood

I don't know if it is working correctly but this path probably ought to be changed in the package.

This package doesn't have a maintainer and actually should have been removed from the distro when maradns was dropped in advance of the Mageia 5 release, unfortunately we missed it.

Remmy, I'll assign this to you just in case you do decide to update maradns to 2.0 and bring it back for Mageia 5, you could fix this then. If you don't plan to, feel free to unassign yourself and we'll consider this package unsupported for now.

Thanks for the report.

I didn't even know this package was part of Mageia. I'll take this package, and also package a new maradns 2.0 release (the authorative nameserver part).

Thanks for the report Rolf, thanks for triaging it David!

neoclust, you're listed as the maintainer, now.. is that intentional or an error?

This bug report was filed against Mageia 5, but we do still have deadwood, which wasn't touched by anybody except umeabot since February 2011, when it was imported :-(

Re-assigning to all packagers collectively, in the hope one of them will find time to obsolete this package.
