Reverted to mga4 iwlwifi-agn which contains iwlwifi-7260-7.ucode; but that doesn't work either.
Dell M6800 (Intel i7-4710MQ 8 threads) 32GB memory

However, maybe there's a bug in the fact that it didn't migrate automatically towards kernel-tmb-desktop. The whole laptop v. desktop has been a mess IMO for some time... There's no way to choose a laptop version of the kernel, and the desktop version (not sure about mga5) did not support laptop features like lid-{close,open}, etc.
However, the point of this bug is that wifi does not work after upgrading or installing to mga5 because the release's kernel is looking for an old iwlwifi-7260* that's older than what is included in the firmware rpm.
BTW, now on:

Nope, the point of this bug is that after an upgrade via urpmi, it made you stay with an old Mageia 4 kernel whereas it upgraded the firmware rpm. This is, from what I understand, due to the removal of kernel-tmb-laptop from Mageia 5.

FOR_ERRATA Agree with _root_ cause -- this bug also affects boot.iso methods of upgrading/installing (see bug 16209 where the same issue was the root cause).
