Description jeff deifik 2015-06-25 01:33:01 CEST
Description of problem:
I did a fresh install of mageia 5.
I have an old ibm 300PL with a ati rage 128 card.
No matter what video driver I selected, ati, vesa, or framebuffer and what resolution I selected, I was unable to get video working using the vga output (the only output for the card). I tried the installer graphics configuration as well as drakconf.

I reverted back to mageia 4, doing a fresh install.
Graphics card properly detected, monitor properly detected, and I was able to get working graphics at 3 different resolutions. The graphics configuration with mageia 4 was super easy and worked the first time.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Please provide the output of "lspcidrake -v" from both Mageia 4 and Mageia 5.

I have removed mageia 5 from the computer, so it will take awhile to get the mageia 5 output.

I reloaded mageia 5 from scratch, and it seems to work fine. It is odd, because it didn't work last time.

How many times did you reproduce the issue?

Which iso did you use to install from?
If it is the exactly the same iso as when you hit the issue, did you then install from the unchanged USB-key or DVD?

Also: did you run updates at the end of install?

I understand why you didn't attach the requested Mageia 5 output and files: because you didn't hit the issue now.

However, why didn't you attach the requested Mageia 4 output + files?

I only did the install once before reporting the bug.
I did try at least 10 different video configurations, but none worked.
I used Mageia-5-i586-DVD.iso, and I verified the md5.
I installed on dvd.
I did not run updates at the end of the install.

I now suspect that a vga cable between my monitor and my kvm switch which was missing the EDID signal caused the confusion. I has a similar issue with another computer and fedora 22. I switched out the bad cable before I did the second install of mageia 5.

Thanks a lot for all the feedback, Jeff

A bad cable isn't a Mageia bug, so closing this report as invalid.

However, if the same issue re-occurs with the new cable, then please:g
* reopen this report and
* attach the Mageia 5 output + files that were requested before.
