Description Lucien XU 2011-02-23 16:30:34 CET
Description of problem:
Broadcom wireless cards are such a pain in linux. For some cards, you need to extract the firmware with fwcutter, and others cards are not supported by this method. Broadcom provides drivers, but sometimes fails to compile ...

Providing dkms-broadcom-wl may help some broadcom related problems. Please import it.
Thanks in advance

I solve a broadcom problem here:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86#c1

But indeed I think dkms-broadcom-wl may be into repository.

Thanks.

I don't know if b43 fw supports AGN broadcom cards.
I just know that my computer has a broadcom that is quite aweful :S
I have tried firmwarecutter and other methods, but it always failed.
Moreover, my card is not detected by MCC, it only provides the "ndiswrapper" option. And, with broadcom-wl installed, it is detected as eth0, and not wlan0 ...
Comment 3 Oliver Burger 2011-03-05 18:15:47 CET
broadcom-wl is proprietary imho. Does anyone know their redistribution license?

And you are right, there are broadcom cards out there not supported by b43.

There is a new driver in staging/ that is supposed to ssupport atleast some of theese cards...

can you install kernel-firmware-extra

modprobe brcm80211

and check dmesg for any output.
Comment 5 Lucien XU 2011-03-12 23:07:14 CET
I have installed kernel-firmware-extra, and I tried modprobe the module, but dmesg only outputs :

brcm80211: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

My card is a BCM4322. It should be supported by brcm, but well ... nothing happens.

Same pb here with a brcm4312 - no wifi is bad for a netbook.

Same with BCM4313. It works good with dkms-broadcom-wl (from mdv)

broadcom-wl v5.100.82.38 is now imported to nonfree/release

Status: NEW => RESOLVED
Resolution: (none) => FIXED

Comment 9 Wolfgang Bornath 2011-03-17 23:57:42 CET
Unfortunately this is not working here.

 - installed dkms-broadcom-wl (including all dependencies)
 - rebooted (to be sure)
 - went to MCC->Network->New network connection
 - clicked on "Wireless"
 - all I get is "Select the network device to configure: wlan: wlan0"
 - if I select this the system tells me it needs the firmware: /lib/firmware/b43/ucode*.fw is missing.

lspci says:
05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

Same device worked out of the box with Mandriva 2010.1, Ubuntu.
