Replying to myself: not so simple. The kernel versions report themselves as the same.
I've been trying to make sense of this, and getting more confused by the moment. After some 20+ reboots, I've 'seen' wifi stations 3 times - blank all the other times. Hardware issue??

tmb Awaiting a replacement wifi chip in this still-new laptop; had just replaced power-supply for hint of high-voltage leak to chassis :-( Maybe hardware issue from this?? Tony Problem seems resolved with replacement wifi card in this near-new laptop. Closing bug - Thankyou all (for discussion in QA if not here). Status:
