Mate panel applet workspace switcher does not allow to choose number of workspaces. The problem is marco wm naming changes during 1.8 bugfix series. This is a known bug for mate-panel by upstream and fixed in 1.9 development series. 


I have use upstream git commit (https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/pull/240) to patch mate-panel and it seems worked. Please try mate-panel-1.8.1-3.mga5

Thanks. Then, it is confirmed that mate-panel-1.8.1-3.mga5 fixes this issue. So, i' m closing this bug report.
