Description Jeff Robins 2011-05-30 00:14:44 CEST
Description of problem:
The ntfsprogs collection builds extra tools if one executes "make extra" after "make". These tools have less support, documentation and testing, but can still be very useful, or required, when trying to recover or move a damaged NTFS partition. This could be a separate package from the normal ntfsprogs package to keep the average user from installing the programs.

Extra Tools:
ntfsdump_logfile
ntfswipe
ntfstruncate
ntfsmove
ntfsmftalloc
ntfsck

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

This still exists in Mageia 2. I'll try to handle it after Cauldron will re-open.

OK, I have taken a look - "make extra" builds these executables, but I don't see an easy way to install them (unless we use install(1) or copy them manually. Is there a way to workaround this?

Shlomi,

I have to honest that I'm not sure. I'll try to look at it later today.

They may not have an easy install command because they are somewhat experimental and the ntfsprogs authors want to limit the accidental install.

Thank you,

Jeff

I looked at the Makefile and I don't see an option for installing the extra programs, so we would have to do one ourselves.

BTW, are we keeping the package separate from NTFS-3g or are we combining the packages?

Well, I don't feel too comfortable with installing such programs that were deemed so experimental. One option which we may consider is installing them to a prefix, say, /usr/share/ntfsprogs/extra-programs or /usr/lib/ntfsprogs/extra-programs or whatever.

How is NTFS-3g different from ntfsprogs? I've used NTFS-3g in the past to mount NTFS partitions. Do they share history?

The prefix sounds good to me. I still think they should be a separate package though. You don't normally need the programs, so I'd rather not have them installed by default on a users system.

I've noticed that they were separate packages a long time ago and I've always wondered why myself. After looking at Wikipedia and the actual projects, it looks like ntfs-3g is for using the NTFS partition and ntfsprogs is for working on the partition, but not mounting it.

ntfsprogs doesn't seem to have a mount command, but does include tools to clone and fix the partition.

OK, hopefully I'll get to preparing an -extra package when I'm in the mood. In the meanwhile, patches (against the .spec / etc.) are welcome.

Does this need to be left open?

Well, I left this bug open so it will be handled eventually. However, I forgot about it. I'm fine for closing it because I don't need these NTFS tools myself, but the original requester may want them.

Jeff, do you still need them?

Comment 15 Jeff Robins 2015-03-29 17:24:04 CEST
I haven't actually needed them since the day I filed the bug, but they are required if you need to fix an NTFS partition. These tools do more then the ones provided by Microsoft.

I'm okay with closing this. When I started the packager process I had this package and another in mind, but I wasn't able to find time to complete the process.

BTW, I apologize for not answering this earlier. I started to, but got distracted.

In accordance with this I'm going to close this bug.
