Switching to another tty doesn't work, however, rebooting with the alt+SysRq keycombinations does work. After switching to nouveau booting into KDE works fine, everything looks OK, including full HD video. CC:

journalctl output of frozen nvidia boot
I'm amazed to see in the journalctl output, that the system wasn't frozen at all: I just couldn't see a thing
otoh, normally when using the SysRq keys, that is visible in journalctl, isn't it? I did not see that here! @ tmb Do you mind looking at the Xorg log and the journalctl output? The video card is: NVIDIA GeForce 8100 to GeForce 360: NVIDIA Corporation|GT200 [GeForce GTX 260] [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:05e2 subv:1682 subd:2392) (rev: a1) (Adding "feedback" on the whiteboard) for Comment 2: s/a thing/anything but a frozen screen/ Whiteboard:

Can you ssh into that "frozen" system at all ? (In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #10) > > Can you ssh into that "frozen" system at all ? Well, booting with NVidia doesn't give any problems now, and Xorg.0.log doesn't display weird "@@@@@" lines after "Enabling 2D acceleration" anymore, but normal lines. I'll boot into it a few more times, to see whether it still freezes now and then, or not. No, I can't reproduce it anymore.. sorry for having bothered you with it, Thomas! I'll try NVIDIA with the new mga4 kernel too, maybe it works there just as well, now (I hadn't tried, because I had a similar problem as here with an older Mga4 kernel) Whiteboard:

It also fixes the following security issue: The kvm_iommu_map_pages function in virt/kvm/iommu.c in the Linux kernel through 3.16.1 miscalculates the number of pages during the handling of a mapping failure, which allows guest OS users to (1) cause a denial of service (host OS memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by triggering a large gfn value or (2) cause a denial of service (host OS memory consumption) by triggering a small gfn value that leads to permanently pinned pages. (CVE-2014-3601) For other changes, see the referenced changelogs.
