This may help in pinning it down. A similar encrypted system logs into KDE4 as usual. Both systems are running in a VirtualBox, and both run KDE4 ubdated from a fresh install og Mageia5 alpha2 (DVD). For what it is worth: everything was fine until I updated some files last weekend (systemd?). After that no graphics anymore at login. I did a fresh install of alpha 2 and installed all the updates and everything was fine again. CC:

REOPENED Unfortunately, I am not sure. Normally there are updates to several packages. It may be related to another bug that I have reported. For a long time I have noticed that system users are shown on the login screen. They went away at the same time that the login screen appeared again. I now remember that I chose to inspect an "rpmnew" configuration file, and that I chose the new one. Unfortunately I do not remember on which system I did it. It could be a simple configuration problem. Again, I am, unfortunately, not familiar with the inner workings of the start-up procedure. System users are shown because of MinShowUID=500 in /var/lib/mageia/kde4-profiles/Default/share/config/kdm/kdmrc This had been changed to MinShowUID=1000 in the system that did not show system users. This is most likely not related. I also saw system user shown in de kdm login box and solved it by modifying the MinShowUID value of kdmrc. but, of course, that didnt solve the problem of graphical environment where X is not even tried to be started (no Xorg.0.log after the startup). the update of today(initscripts) solved the problem.
