Offered updates today and tried to use the software installer both the update
specific one on the desktop and the MCC software and got the same message
from both which was that the new kernel is in conflict woth a 586 kernel
and cannot be updated.

you have two arch kernel installed ? why ?

After filing the bug I was offered two library updates which
were done and required that I reboot.  Then the original updates
were offered again after the reboot.  I did have minor problems
in that the Grub entries had changed but the second time I picked
one of the numbered kernels and I got back to the desktop 
environment.

I guess the issue is fixed then? I've no idea how you have ended up with a i586 kernel on a x86_64 machine though.
