Description of problem: Created a flash drive containing 
Mageia-3-i586-DVD.iso using dd
dd if=Mageia-3-i586-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=1M

The resulting drive has one partition, /dev/sdc1 but that partition is umountable and does not seem to exist. However if I mount /dev/sdc I get a reasonable directory structure.
mount /dev/sdc /media/disk
ls /media/disk
./  ../  autorun.inf  boot.catalog  dosutils/  i586/

If I try to use that usb stick as a drive containing the installation material for a CD boot.iso installation, it sees only the /dev/sdc1 partition, which it cannot mount. (The computer cannot boot from a usb device, so I had to try to go through this flash drive route.) 

Ie, the partition structure that a dd copy of  Mageia-3-i586-DVD.iso seems to create on the flash drive seems to be defective.

Its not defective, its a hybrid iso so you can boot direct from the usb stick
