Same problem, same fix for me. I saw this on a server with Matrox card after installing Mageia 4. I didn't care much because, hey, it's a server in a closet. I set it to boot to multiuser rather than graphics and forgot about it. But installing x11-driver-video-modesetting does indeed fix it so that startx or boot to level 5 works as it should.
