Description Tony Blackwell 2014-02-07 19:49:28 CET
Description of problem:
I'm starting to think we've a major graphics problem. I've had a lot of help trying to debug why M4 beta2 x86_64 worked fine using the intel driver until a week or so before Release. Changing to my old laptop, I've installed M4 final round 6 (same MD5 as the released version, so I guess it is truly the same?). Hardware is an Acer Extensa 5620 Z, Intel mobile GM965/GL960 graphics, and again boots only to emergency # prompt.

XFdrake: fails to get _any_ graphics:
Intel 810, monitor 1280 x 800, resolution 1280x800 : fails
     - works just fine with M3
Xorg Intel : fails
Xorg vesa: fails

So it looks like my earlier Nvidia plus Intel dual graphics problem is not the real issue here. Something seems up-the-creek if a trivial install on old hardware with well-known Intel integrated graphics won't start a graphics session.
Ideas?

My 2nd sentence above referred to bug 11477, dual Intel and Nvidia graphics on modern UEFI laptop. Seeing same graphics failure on this old laptop which still runs Mageia3 just fine, points to a more basic problem with the M4 x86_64 release I think.

looking at the output of journalctl -xb, the only odd thing I can see is:

drakx11: the graphics card does not like X in framebuffer

but it goes on to apparently complete successfully as recorded there - but doesn't work in real life.

For your hybrid graphics isse, please check all the points from https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_4_Errata#Live_CD.2FDVD (except for the first one about locales)

I've still not succeeded in getting even the Intel graphics up. Where do I find a log file which may help? I don't see anything useful from 'journalctl -xb'

Is there anything else I can do?

This does seem to have been a recent regression just before M4 release.

You want the logs from X server. So best copy away /var/log/Xorg.0.log
But I still don't get the difference to all the other users who have Intel cards or hybrid graphics, that don't have a similar issue?

Also, you didn't comment if you tried the suggestions in above mentioned errata section?

And isn't this bug a duplicate of https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11477 ?

Comment 7 Tony Blackwell 2014-02-16 23:58:46 CET
No, it isn't a duplicate of bug 11477.
11477 refers to hybrid Intel plus nvidia graphics.
This bug refers to Intel graphics alone, with no other graphics chipset.
