Description Brian McNeil 2014-01-31 16:02:30 CET
Description of problem:
Configuration tools (MCC, Network center) list the detected HP hs2434 (sierra wireless based) mobile broadband modem built into my HP dm1 4310nr laptop as a wired Ethernet connection and don't provide the configuration tools necessary for a cellular 3G modem. The Network Center mobile broadband config tools won't associate the configuration with the hardware. The LED indicator for WWAN is Orange for the first part of bootup, the turns off. At shut down it turns orange again in the last part of shutdown. The WAN light, for reference turns orange when the WAN is turned on, then blue when connected.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Current kernel is 3.10.24-desktop-2.mga3

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use any Mageia configuration tool and they display WWAN0 as wired Ethernet.
2. Use any Mageia broadband configuration tools and they don't find appropriate hardware.
3.

The version of ModemManager in Mageia 3 appears to be quite dated (0.6 )the current stable release of ModemManager is 1.2 , and it appears that the updates address problems with Sierra Wireless Modems, as well as other bug fixes.

I did a fresh KDE install of mga4 and nothing has changed. The mobile broadband modem is still listed as a wired Ethernet device, and it is not possible to configure it as a modem using either Mageia tools or the NetworkManager/ModemManager tools.

No change with update to networkmanager-0.9.8.8-3.1.mga4

OK, this is an easy fix.
is not listed in the right category.
See http://gitweb.mageia.org/software/drakx/commit/kernel/list_modules.pm?id=0a282862fa0

Can you add "cdc_mbim" to the cellular category?
See http://gitweb.mageia.org/software/drakx/tree/kernel/list_modules.pm#n81
As root, just alter the /usr/lib/libDrakX/list_modules.pm file:

Replaces:

cellular => [
      qw(hso nozomi option sierra),

by:

cellular => [
      qw(cdc_mbim hso nozomi option sierra),

and remove the other reference to "cdc_mbim" in "usb"
