Description of problem: No pattern yet; but it seems to occur on 2nd or later laptop lid close/open sequence.  Open lid and no way to login.

Workaround:  Ctrl+Alt+F2, "kill `pidof kdm`"

There are many possible reasons for this and many things that can kick in when you open/close the lid, like acpi actions (defined in /etc/acpi) and systemd's new support for Lid switch actions (configured through /etc/systemd/logind.conf).  I'd guess the latter is causing your issues.  Try researching and experimenting with that.
