Description of problem:

 I am running Mageia beta2 (32bits) installed and up to date (today May, 07th 2011) on a dell laptop latitude D810. X server runs ATI radeon driver. 

It's impossible to activate 3D effetcs under kde 4.6.3. When I click on "apply" button, my session freeze during 20 seconds and then return in normal mode but without 3D effects activated. On Mandriva 2010.2, same laptop works perfectly with 3D effects activated.  
 In 2D the computer behave normally.

Could try this :

kwriteconfig -file kwinrc -group Compositing -key OpenGLIsUnsafe false
kwriteconfig -file kwinrc -group Compositing -key CheckIsSafe true
kwriteconfig -file kwinrc -group Compositing -key DisableChecks true
kwriteconfig -file kwinrc -group Compositing -key Enabled true


& then you can try eventually with

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 kwin --replace

 Hi,

 actually John, your post gave me the solution. when I tried to enable deskop effects, I did not look at the advanced tab from the "configure desktop effects",dialog box. From this tab, "enable direct rendring" check box was not checked. Once checked desktop effect works flawlessly. So no more bug for me :)
